Embiid continues MVP play

Joel Embiid just missed his first triple-double of the season with 35 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in Saturday’s win over Oklahoma City. Last year’s NBA MVP is leading the league in scoring with 32.1 points per game. While that’s a point off last season’s pace, the 7-foot Cameroonian is averaging a career-high 6.3 assists (versus 4.2 in 2022-23) with 11.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game.

With Tyrese Maxey averaging 26.4 points, 6.8 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game, Philadelphia hasn’t missed James Harden this season. After going 3-2 on their five-game road, the 76ers host the Lakers before hitting the road once again.

LeBron defies aging yet again

LeBron James scored 22 points, six rebounds and six assists in a 121-115 victory over the Cavaliers on Saturday. The 39-year-old legend is pacing the Lakers in scoring in his 21st season with 25.5 points, eight rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. His running mate Anthony Davis is also off to a strong start with five-consecutive double-doubles and 13 in 16 games this season.

With wins in seven of their past nine games, and three-straight W’s on the road, Los Angeles is comfortably in a playoff spot in the Western Conference, However, they’ll likely need to trade for a third star to go along James and Davis to be true contenders.

Philadelphia vs Los Angeles

Philadelphia is a 5-point home favorite on Monday with the over/under set at 231.5 points. Nick Nurse’s team is 6-3 against the spread in the Wells Fargo Center this season after covering 60% of home games last year. Los Angeles has a 4-4 ATS mark away from home after capturing their last three road games against the Suns, Trail Blazers and Cavaliers.

Almost two-thirds of Lakers’ contests (64.7%) have hit the UNDER this season while 10 of 16 Sixers’ games (62.5%) have gone OVER.

Recent history

Joel Embiid had 35 points and 11 rebounds in a 113-112 road win over the Lakers last January while LeBron James almost had a triple-double (35 points, 10 assists, 8 rebounds) in a losing effort.

Anthony Davis missed that matchup with a foot injury, but he was present in Los Angeles’ 133-122 road loss to the Sixers last December. AD put up 31 points and 12 rebounds, but was ultimately outplayed by Embiid who had 38 points and 12 boards in the victory.

Best Bet

Philadelphia has struggled of late with four losses in their last seven games. While the 76ers should come away with the home win, we like the Lakers to cover (+5) in the City of Brotherly Love on Monday with the OVER 231.5.
