Freshman QBs face off

With Dillon Gabriel entering the transfer portal, former five-star recruit Jackson Arnold will be suiting up for the Sooners in the Alamo Bowl. The true freshman made five relief appearances this year, completing 18 of 24 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

Arnold will be facing off with freshman signal caller Noah Fifita. After taking over early in the year, the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year completed 73.6% of his attempts for 2,446 passing yards with 23 TDs and five interceptions in eight games.

Venables rebounds in year two

Oklahoma started 8-0 and was ranked in the top-five before losing by a combined eight points to Kansas and Oklahoma State. Still, Brett Venables captained a solid 10-2 record following an ugly 6-7 mark in his first year in Norman.

Clemson’s former defensive coordinator will need to find a way to slow down a Wildcats offense that has racked up 38.8 points per game in six straight wins.

Sooners vs Wildcats

Arizona is 3-point favorite at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas with the over/under set at a sky-high 62 points. The Sooners rank No. 3 nationally in scoring offense (43.2 ppg) while the Wildcats rank No. 22 (34.3 ppg).

Jedd Fisch’s team has improved in each of the past three years, going from 1-11 to 5-7 to 9-3 this season. They won their last six games to qualify for their first bowl game since 2017.

Bowl game history

“Oklahoma has won 10 games or more 19 of the last 23 years. We’ve won 10 games three times in a hundred years,” said Arizona coach Jedd Fisch about his Alamo Bowl matchup with the college football blueblood Sooners.

It’s the third meeting between the programs as they split a home-and-home series in 1988 and 1989.

Best Bet

Outside of the CFP and New Year’s Six bowl games, Sooners vs Wildcats is the highest-ranked matchup of the bowl season.

While the Wildcats have been red hot, Venables could help Oklahoma get a few more stops on defense. We like the Sooners to score the upset (+130) over Arizona in a high-scoring contest that hits the OVER 62.
