Auburn and Maryland will face off for the first time in 40 years in this year’s Music City Bowl. The Terrapins are looking to win their third bowl game in three seasons for the first time in school history. Meanwhile, the Tigers are glad to be back in bowl action after missing the postseason in 2022.

Tagovailoa leads the Terrapins
Maryland ranked No. 2 in the Big Ten in total offense (393.8 points per game). Taulia Tagovailoa, the younger brother of the Miami Dolphins starter, paced the conference with 3,377 passing yards this season, with 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
The Big Ten’s all-time leading passer used all of his weapons in 2023, as four different Terrapins receivers recorded at least 40 receptions. However, Tagovailoa will be without one of them in the Music City Bowl. Tight end Corey Dyches put himself in the transfer portal.

Auburn’s close call
Auburn almost knocked the Crimson Tide out of the College Football Playoff and gave coach Hugh Freeze a huge win in his first season with the program. Alabama connected on a 31-yard TD pass on fourth down with just 32 seconds left to play for a 27-24 victory.
The loss in the regular-season finale dropped the Tigers to 3-5 in the SEC West. Maryland was also .500 (4-5) in the Big Ten East.

Auburn is a 2.5-point favorite at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee and the over/under is set at 50.0 points. The question is if Payton Thorne can keep pace with Tagovailoa. Auburn’s junior QB passed for only 1,671 yards and 15 TDs this season.

Bowl game history
While Auburn hasn’t faced the Terrapins since 1983, they’re 2-1 all-time against Maryland. The Tigers have won their previous two appearances in the Music City Bowl. That said, they dropped their last bowl game 35-19 to Northwestern in the 2021 Citrus Bowl.
Mike Locksley’s squad is playing in third bowl in a row after beating North Carolina State 16-12 in the 2022 Duke’s Mayo Bowl and Virginia Tech 54-10 in the 2021 Pinstripe Bowl.
Best Bet
Auburn has lost three consecutive bowl games while Maryland is looking to win three straight for the first time in school history. However, this is the Terrapins’ first SEC bowl opponent since 2002.
