49ers expected to go under

The over/under for total sacks in Super Bowl 58 is set at 4.5 with heavy juice towards the UNDER (-130). San Francisco’s offensive line allowed two sacks versus the Lions and one against the Packers. Patrick Mahomes has the second-lowest sack rate in the NFL, but was brought down twice by the Ravens in the AFC Championship Game.

Bettors have hammered the UNDER (-200) on 2.5 sacks by the 49ers while the Chiefs are -125 to hit the OVER on 2.5. KC’s defense recorded 3.2 sacks per game during the regular season and got to Lamar Jackson four times last week. Meanwhile, Nick Bosa recorded the Niners’ only two sacks of the postseason against Detroit.

Costly mistakes

The over/under is set at 2.5 turnovers. San Francisco generated 1.6 takeaways per game (tied for No. 4 in the NFL) while the Chiefs offense gave the ball away 1.5 times per game (ninth-worst). Kansas City’s defense was also bottom-ten in turnovers (1.1) while Kyle Shanahan’s offense averaged only one giveaway per contest.

Steve Spagnuolo’s D generated three turnovers in the AFC Championship win over Baltimore and intercepted Tua Tagovailoa on Wild Card Weekend. The 49ers picked off Jordan Love twice in the Divisional Round and recovered a Jahmyr Gibbs fumble in the NFC Championship.

Making Super Bowl history?

There has never been a punt returned for a touchdown through 57 Super Bowl games. Neither the Niners or Chiefs were one of the eight teams to return a punt to the house during the 2023 season. While there were half as many kick return TDs (4) this year, there have been 10 kickoffs returned for touchdowns in Super Bowl history.

However, NFL rule changes have made them increasingly rare. The last one was by Seattle’s Percy Harvin against the Broncos a decade ago in Super Bowl 48. So, forget the kick return score at +1400. Let’s wager on Super Bowl history being made with a punt return TD (+1200).
