Jalen Hurts’ Eagles to punish Vikings in Thursday Night bloodbath

  • Philadelphia is a 7.5-point home favorite over Minnesota on Thursday Night Football
  • Kirk Cousins committed three turnovers in a season-opening loss to the Buccaneers
  • Week 2’s matchup kicks off from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA at 8:15pm ET

Philadelphia hosts Minnesota on Thursday night after narrowly surviving a trip to Foxborough on Sunday. The Eagles offense looked rusty in the season opener versus the Patriots, but their defense did just enough to escape with a 25-20 victory. The reigning NFC champions now host a 0-1 Vikings team that was upset 20-17 by the Buccaneers in Week 1.

Before we check the odds on Eagles vs. Vikings and make our picks, here’s where you can find the best Super Bowl betting tips and the top betting sites for NFL football in 2023.

Philly favored at home

Philadelphia is 7.5-point chalk in their home opener. The Eagles also welcomed Minnesota to Lincoln Financial Field in Week 2 of last year, registering a 24-7 blowout win on Monday Night Football. Struggling in primetime as always, Kirk Cousins tossed three interceptions in the loss.

Captain Kirk didn’t fare much better in a season-opening defeat to Tampa Bay last Sunday. The 35-year-old soon-to-be free agent committed three costly turnovers, including two fumbles and an interception on the Bucs’ 2-yard line. After winning 11 one-score games in 2022, the Vikings luck may have already run out.

Jalen Hurts struggles

With Jalen Hurts at the controls, Philadelphia scored one or fewer offensive TDs only once last season – a meaningless Week 18 game against the Giants. However, Bill Belichick limited the Eagles to just one passing TD on Sunday. Jalen Hurts was held to only 170 passing yards and 37 rushing yards with a fumble.

Luckily, Nick Sirianni’s defense came to play with Fletcher Cox and rookie Jalen Carter generating consistent pressure up the middle. Darius Slay picked off Mac Jones on the opening drive and took it to the house. Sophomore DT Jordan Davis stripped Ezekiel Elliott of the ball on the very next drive, helping put the green bird’s up 16-0.

Minnesota might be real bad

Losing to Baker Mayfield at home is certainly not the way you want to start the season. However, there were a few positives for the Vikings. Justin Jefferson secured nine catches for 150 yards and his rookie running mate Jordan Addison scored a touchdown in his debut. Their defense under new coordinator Brian Flores also looked much improved, allowing only 242 total yards.

Flores is a former Belichick disciple who can replicate the Patriots’ Week 1 game plan against Philly. But… Minnesota’s D has nowhere near the skill level of New England’s. And containing Hurts is infinitely times more difficult than stopping Baker Mayfield.

While Kirk Cousins changed the media narrative around him by coming across as extremely likeable in the Netflix Quarterback series, his online detractors will be back in a big way this week.

Philadelphia will punish the Vikings on Thursday Night Football, coming away with an easy win and a plethora of points for the OVER 48.
