Packers to defeat Lions in NFC North battle on Thursday Night Football

  • Detroit (2-1) is a 2-point road favorite over the Packers (2-1) on Thursday Night Football
  • The Lions defeated their NFC North rivals in both games last season
  • Week 3’s matchup kicks off from Lambeau Field in Green Bay, WI at 8:15pm ET

The last time the Lions were at Lambeau Field they put an end to the Aaron Rodgers era with a 20-16 win in the regular-season finale that snuffed out Green Bay’s playoff chances. On Thursday, they will be facing Jordan Love, who led his Packers to an 18-17 comeback victory over the Saints on Sunday.

With the division rivals both off to a 2-1 start, which team will take control of the NFC North? Before we check the odds on the Week 4 contest, here’s where you can find the best Super Bowl betting tips and the top betting sites for NFL football in 2023.

Detroit bounces back

Hopes were high in the Motor City following an opening-season win over the Super Bowl champion Chiefs, however, the Lions fell at home to the Seahawks the very next week. Dan Campbell’s team immediately renewed enthusiasm on Sunday with a resounding 20-6 victory over the previously unbeaten Falcons.

Led by star pass rusher Aidan Hutchison, Detroit’s defense sacked Desmond Ridder seven times and contained rookie Bijan Robinson to just 60 total yards. Jared Goff finished with a touchdown through the air and on the ground, connecting with rookie tight end Sam LaPorta for eight receptions, 84 yards and a score.  Amon-Ra St. Brown also added nine grabs for 102 yards.

Packers rally to a win

Playing without Aaron Jones, Christian Watson and David Bakhtiari, the Packers were in a 17-0 hole to the Saints in the fourth-quarter on Sunday. That’s when Jordan Love caught fire, leading Green Bay to their largest comeback win since Week 1 of the 2018 season. (Not a bad Lambeau Field debut for the first-year starter.)

Love finished with 259 passing yards, a TD and an INT with another 39 yards and a score on the ground.  Ideally, he’ll have Jones, Watson and Bakhtiari all back on Thursday but that might be asking too much on a short week.

Green Bay vs Detroit

Green Bay is a 2-point underdog at Lambeau Field with the over/under set at a lowly 44.5 points. Both teams’ defenses were excellent on Sunday. Linebacker Rashan Gary sacked David Carr three times, knocking him out of the game with an AC joint sprain. The Packers allowed just 101 net yards in the second half, setting the stage for the comeback win.

Detroit’s defense also looked much better after permitting 37 points to Seattle at home in week 2. The Lions held Atlanta to 6 points, but Falcons QB Desmond Ridder may deserve a lot of the credit (or blame). He completed only 21 of 38 passes for 201 yards and no touchdowns.

Best Bet

Detroit won both games in this series in 2022 and were popular picks to claim the NFC North heading into the season. Dan Campbell’s club also just whipped a Falcons team that handed the Packers a 25-24 loss in week 2. All that said, Jared Goff traditionally struggles in the elements. The 28-year-old threw 6 TDs and 4 INTs in road games last season compared to 23 TDs and 3 INTs at home.

We’ll take the Packers to cover +2 at home with the OVER 44.5 points.
