Jets defense to stifle Herbert’s Chargers in upset win on Monday night

  • The Jets (4-3) are 3-point home underdogs against the Chargers (3-4) in Week 9 of the NFL season
  • Justin Herbert passed for 298 yards and 3 TDs in a blowout win over Chicago on Sunday
  • Monday Night Football on ESPN kicks off from MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ at 8:15 pm ET

After an improbable comeback against the Giants on Sunday, the Jets are still in the AFC playoff mix with Aaron Rodgers on the sidelines. Robert Saleh’s team will be looking for its fourth-straight victory when they host the Chargers on Monday Night Football.

Justin Herbert’s club is coming off an easy 30-13 over the Bears in week 8, but Gang Green’s defense will provide a much stiffer test. Before we check the odds on the week 9 matchup, here’s where you can find the best Super Bowl betting tips and the top betting sites for NFL football in 2023.

Herbert looks sharp in win

Coming off a couple of the worst games of his young career, Justin Herbert threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-13 triumph over the Bears. The 25-year-old opened the game with 11 straight completions and had 120 passing yards and two scores by the end of the first quarter. And while he was quiet on the ground yet again (15 carries for 29 yards), Austin Ekeler added seven receptions for 94 yards and TD.

It’s yet to be determined if Sunday night’s win will prove to be a turning point for a talented Chargers squad that has a penchant for coming up small in big moments.

Ugly win at MetLife

The old saying, “A win is a win” was made for the Jets’ 13-10 overtime victory over the Giants. The combined 15 punts between the two New York teams in the first half were the most since the NFL started collecting the data in 1991. And the game’s 24 total punts were more than the total number of points scored (23). Woof!

Still, Zach Wilson led a game-tying field goal drive with just 24 seconds left on the clock. Robert Saleh’s defense then forced third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito to a three-and-out before Greg Zuerlein kicked the game-winner.

New York vs Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a 3-point road favorite at MetLife Stadium on Monday night with the over/under set at 41.5 points. This matchup pits the Chargers’ No. 8 ranked scoring offense (24.9 points per game) versus a Jets defense that is the eighth-best at keeping points off the board (18.4).

Gang Green ranks No. 5 against the pass, allowing only 184.4 yards per game, while the Bolts do most of their damage through the air. Their 258.9 passing yards per week ranks fifth in the NFL. Robert Saleh’s team is the second-worst against the run, but Ekeler is averaging 2.3 yards per carry since returning from injury.

Can the Jets score?

Quinnen Williams and Sauce Gardner are plenty capable of slowing down LA’s offense. But with Aaron Rodgers limited to long-winded Pat McAfee appearances, can Zack Wilson and the Jets’ No. 31-ranked passing offense move the ball against the Bolts’ league-worst passing defense?

While New York would certainly prefer to rely Breece Hall, the Bolts’ run D ranks No. 6, limiting opponents to 93.4 yards per game.

Best Bet

This one sets up well for another Brandon Staley game management disaster. While there’s no excuse for the Chargers to lose to Zach Wilson, they absolutely will. Take the Jets to win straight up (+140) and the UNDER 41.5 points.
