San Francisco to squeak by Cowboys and remain undefeated

  • San Francisco (4-0) is a 3.5-point home favorite over the Cowboys (3-1) in Week 5 of the NFL season
  • The undefeated 49ers have scored 30+ points in every win this year while Dallas is limiting opponents to a league-best 10.3 points per game
  • Sunday Night Football on NBC kicks off from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA at 8:20pm ET

Having been knocked out of the playoffs by the 49ers in each of the past two seasons, the Cowboys head to San Francisco in week 5 with revenge on their mind. Dallas is coming off a 38-3 beatdown of the Patriots while Kyle Shanahan’s club improved to 4-0 with an easy 35-16 win over the Cardinals.

Who will win this classic NFL rivalry game on Sunday Night Football? Before we check the odds, here’s where you can find the best Super Bowl betting tips and the top betting sites for NFL football in 2023.

Can CMC be stopped?

Generating buzz for NFL MVP, Christian McCaffrey scored four touchdowns in Sunday’s 35-16 victory over Arizona, collecting 177 yards from scrimmage on 27 touches. Through four weeks, Run CMC leads the NFL with 459 rushing yards and is tied for the league lead with six rushing scores and seven scrimmage TDs.

McCaffrey was relatively quiet in last year’s 19-12 divisional round win over Dallas, with only 57 yards on 16 touches, however, he did punch in a rushing score. In fact, the 27-year-old has scored a TD in 13 straight games, becoming only one of seven players in NFL history to do so.

Dallas gets back on track

Dallas rebounded from week 3’s surprising loss to Arizona to hand Bill Belichick the largest defeat of his 29-year head coaching career. Filling in for the injured Trevon Diggs, DaRon Bland intercepted Mac Jones twice, including a pick-six, in Sunday’s 38-3 massacre of New England.

Dan Quinn’s defense is No. 1 in the NFL, limiting opponents to 10.3 points per game. They’re also allowing the second-fewest total yards (259.8) and passing yards (148) per contest. Micah Parsons left the Patriots game briefly with a knee injury, but he’ll be a full go on Sunday night. The Cowboys star edge rusher has four sacks this season.

San Francisco vs Dallas

San Francisco is a 3.5-point home favorite and the over-under is set at 45 points. Only 31 total points were scored in last January’s divisional round game in Levi’s Stadium (19-12 Niners). Similarly, the 2022 wild-card matchup only produced 40 points (23-17 Niners).

Through four weeks, Mike McCarthy’s squad is only 7 of 19 in the red zone. If those issues persist in week 5, the UNDER should hit comfortably. However, Kyle Shanahan’s undefeated club has put up more than 30 points in all four games this season.

Historical Numbers

The 49ers-Cowboys series is tied at 19-19-1. While they’ve competed in two straight postseasons, this is the first prime-time meeting hosted by San Francisco since 1983.

With their season ending at the hands of the 49ers in each of the past two postseasons, this is a measuring stick game for a Dallas franchise that fired offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in the offseason.

Best Bet

Brock Purdy was only 19-of-29 for 214 yards in last year’s divisional round win over Dallas, but Mr. Irrelevant has looked even better in his sophomore season. Purdy completed 20 out of 21 attempts for 283 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, setting a new franchise record for completion percentage.

While we like Dallas to cover the 3.5 points, their red zone offense is costing them too many points. San Francisco will win by a field goal and improve to a perfect 5-0 this season.
