Hubert Hurkacz Recent Games and Record at Open 13

Hubert Hurkacz appears to be peaking in his career with exceptional performances at the Australian Open and easy victories in Marseille so far. Hurkacz has achieved a personal record high ranking of 8th in the world after his performances in January, which included leading his country to the United Cup final.

The Pole has a devastating serve that some pundits have touted as the best on tour, but his failures in 5-set matches have held him back from the limelight. Hurkacz has notably struggled in Grand Slams with fatigue, a characteristic typical of a hard-hitting server.

Additionally, many of Hurkacz’s sets go to tiebreaks. This is due to a stubbornness to drop serve games, but failure to convert break points on the other end. However, the star Polish player is still just 26 and has plenty of time to grow. Hurkacz has won 7 titles in his career and has advanced as far as the semifinals in major, a feat performed at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

Despite facing relatively unfavorable conditions, Hurkacz easily defeated Alexander Shevchenko with a score of 6-1, 6-4 on Thursday. Hurkacz fired off 13 aces against the Kazakhstani, a potential warning sign for future opponents who feel they can defend against his lethal serve-and-volley tactics.

Tomas Machac Performance at Australian Open

Machac has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Open 13 Provence with wins over Andy Murray and Lorenzo Musetti. Both were completed in straight sets, highlighting Machac’s strong run of form in 2024.

The 23-year old Czech player has a 5-3 record on hard court this season, and has already accumulated a strong resume. Machac knocked out top American Frances Tiafoe down in Melbourne in straight sets, putting his name on the map with a massive major victory.

He achieved his first top-20 and most significant career victory, allowing him to advance to the third round of a Major for the first time.

Machac was later outed by Karen Khachanov, but it took 4 sets and two tiebreaks for the 15th-seeded Russian to do so. Machac has proven an ability to pull out some crazy shots against high-level players, even in key moments. Such versatility and maturity are key indicators of future success on the pro stage, but the Czech has yet to put it all together to win a title.

Tomas Machac first made headlines by forcing Novak Djokovic to a third set tiebreak in Dubai last year. This came even as Machac appeared to hurt his hand in the third set, pushing through injury to seriously scare one of the best to ever play. His brand of attacking tennis and still-growing abilities has excited fans in Czechia, a country that is beginning to grow a reputation for great tennis athletes.

Hubert Hurkacz vs Tomas Machac Prediction and Free Betting Pick

Hurkacz has never looked better in his career, but the same may be said for Machac. Hurkacz’s propensity to keep games close makes me wary of backing him against a player with such high confidence at the moment.

Additionally, the conditions in Marseille have been far from ideal. Both of these players would prefer faster conditions, but the current situation favors Machac. Hurkacz relies heavily on his serve and a slower court will even out the playing field a bit.

While I only see a small edge, this line is too wide. I would have Machac at closer to (+170), affording us some value on his moneyline at (+215) at BetOnline. I don’t have extreme confidence in this play due to the form of both sides, but will be playing a half unit on the Czech youngster to pull off an upset against the serve-reliant Hurkacz playing on such a slow court.
