While betting in person is legal in Maryland, folks are still waiting for the green light to get things done with online sports betting. People of course prefer that method, as it’s much easier to do things from their phones or tablets than driving somewhere. Well, things are on hold, but Maryland is hoping for September mobile betting launch to make things simpler.
That’s a bit of disappointing news, however, as people have been calling for this option to get done as soon as possible. With the state now eyeing September as a date where things can actually get finalized, that’d be massive because it would open the door for people to check out the different sportsbooks and place NFL bets. From start to finish for the year, people will be checking Super Bowl odds.
With so many football fans in Maryland keeping an eye on the Washington Commanders, they’re hoping to make their bets on the team this upcoming season. Again, they’ll be able to do that in person, but they’re ready to just make wagers from the comfort of their own home. If things are passed by September and sportsbooks are in business, it’ll be great for Maryland as a whole.
“Regulations haven’t been written yet,” director of the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency John Martin said back in December. “Application processes haven’t been identified yet. Applications then have to come in, then be reviewed, then we go through our normal vetting and qualification process. So yeah, it’s going to take several months.”

Washington Commanders are hoping for a bounce-back season
For everyone in Maryland who loves the local football team, it’s important to note that the Washington Commanders are hoping for a bounce-back season after disappointing in 2021. The big news of the offseason has been that the team went out and traded with the Indianapolis Colts for quarterback Carson Wentz. Wentz is a former first-round pick and people are excited about his potential.
Having said that, Wentz’s career hasn’t quite gone according to plan. He was a top pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, but he never lived up to the hype. Then, he was traded to the Colts to try and get his career back on track in the AFC South. Last year, Wentz had a lot of problems with his consistency. Way too many balls sailed over WR’s heads, which was pretty frustrating to see.
Despite that, people all over Maryland are hopeful that Wentz can team up with the other playmakers this offseason and get on the same page. Don’t forget that Washington also features star running back Antonio Gibson, who will be ready to have another big year in 2022. The addition of Wentz could help out in those efforts for Gibson and the rest of the standouts on offense.
There’s going to be a ton of pressure on Wentz and the oddsmakers don’t have high hopes in this team. Entering the new season later this year, the Dallas Cowboys still have the top NFL odds to win the NFC East, while the Philadelphia Eagles are second, the Commanders are third and the New York Giants are fourth. It will be on Wentz to try and silence all of his haters and lead Washington to glory.

Maryland knows it’s losing betting money with this delay
Another thing that’s important to note here is that Maryland knows it’s losing betting money with this delay. If things were ready to rock as of this writing, then countless people would be betting on the NCAA Tournament. The Sweet 16 is starting this week and a National Champion will be announced soon enough. Millions and millions of dollars are being bet online.
For people in Maryland, they’re still able to place bets in person, so if they’re die-hard fans, they’re probably driving to local sportsbooks venues and dropping their bets. However, you simply can’t argue with the fact that people are much more inclined to place their bets when they can do it from the phone or laptop. There’s no reason the delay should be taking this long.
Plenty of people have voiced their concerns in recent months and things will only get louder if online sports betting isn’t locked in come September. Looking ahead to this summer, people can’t wait to bet on the Washington Nationals and baseball as a whole. Because online sports betting won’t be legal yet, people will still have to drive in for their in person wagers. This is going to cost the state money.
The good news here, though, is that it looks like positive changes could be coming this fall. For it to happen in time for the 2022 NFL season will be fantastic, as countless online bets will be made from start to finish in the season. The same will be the case for the college football campaign. All eyes will be on the Maryland government to see if the laws end up being changed.
