While loads of people in the area love the Washington Commanders, Maryland bettors have their eyes on the New York Giants as well. This may come as a bit of a surprise, but the reason for this is that the Giants used the No. 24 overall pick in the NFL Draft on Deonte Banks, a former superstar for the University of Maryland. Because of this, Maryland fans will be watching the rookie this season and moving forward.
The intriguing thing about Banks is that he’s expected to start right away for this team. The Giants have had issues with their secondary for a while now, but general manager Joe Schoen traded up to land him late in the first round. Now, Banks has been looking sharp not only at OTAs but at minicamp as well. Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is a big fan of his game and has high expectations for him in ’23.

“I think it’s important to have a cornerback like that in anybody’s defense,” Martindale said. “He’s very instinctive. What’s Ted Lasso say? He lives life like a goldfish. He’s got a short memory when things don’t go right. He’s tough minded, he’s physical, he can tackle and on top of that, he can run. So, we’re excited about it. He’s getting into the groove. There’re still some rookie mistakes, which you expect that, especially this early, but we’re really excited.”

The Giants may not be the favorite team in the state, as the Commanders are, but Banks making his way to East Rutherford has completely changed things.
