Although betting on NCAA football and basketball teams has been quite popular all over Maryland, the state has been dealing with people who have been unhappy with individual players getting bet on. This has led to a lot of confusion and anger among officials and lawmakers. That’s no longer the case, as Maryland has officially banned prop bets for college sports.
According to a report, the decision came in at the start of the month, which is big because of college basketball being in full swing. The main issue here hasn’t been on betting on sports teams, but more on people putting money down on single-player performances. People have been harassing local college athletes if their bets didn’t hit, which has been a huge cause for concern.
That’s why officials felt like they had to step in to get something done here. This past college football season, countless bets in Maryland were placed both on teams and players. A popular prop bet is always going to be how many yards or touchdowns a quarterback might throw. However, if they didn’t hit the over, then this would make bettors angry, leading to negative activity on social media. This had to change.
The good news for sports betting fans is that legal wagers are still allowed on teams. In other states, including Illinois, all college betting is off the table. This isn’t the case for Maryland, but people now will not be able to place their wagers on prop bets for single players. Again, this was a long time coming and it was a move that needed to be processed before things really got out of hand. We’ll see how this change will impact betting as a whole for the state.
March Madness betting is about to take off in Maryland
One thing to keep in mind moving forward is that March Madness betting is about to take off in Maryland. Soon enough, the regular season is going to end for both men’s and women’s basketball and then conference tournaments are going to take center stage. For the University of Maryland, both the men’s and women’s teams need a ton of help to get into the NCAA Tournament, but you never know what might happen.
In their respective conference tourneys, Maryland will need to win if they want to make the Big Dance. It has been a bit of a disappointing regular season for the two teams, but everything could be forgotten if they go on to record several upsets over the next few weeks. Looking at the NCAA tournament as a whole, we don’t have to tell you that NCAAB betting is going to be through the roof across the state.

March Madness, along with the Super Bowl, is arguably the most popular time of the year for sports bettors to do their thing. Even if Maryland doesn’t move on to play, people are going to be paying close attention to rivals to see how they do. Maryland has long had a bit of a rivalry with both Duke and North Carolina, so people will be waiting to see how the two programs end up doing once late March gets here.
North Carolina is a Top 10 team, but they’ve battled some inconsistent play at times this year. That can’t be the case if they want to try and win it all again. Duke is a young, but talented team. At the top, UConn is a powerhouse and there’s strong belief that they’ll be able to win it all. It will be interesting to see which teams end up making the Final Four, but betting in Maryland figures to be quite impressive. We can’t wait to see what the March betting handle turns out to be.

Switching sports, we don’t have to tell you that Orioles betting will be on the rise after spring training comes and goes. Last season, Baltimore stunned everyone by winning the AL East. The year before, the Orioles were a laughingstock and they couldn’t muster up much of anything on offense. That wasn’t the case in 2023.

Now, Baltimore is hoping to not only repeat as the division champs, but they want to go on a deep postseason run. The Red Sox and Yankees, along with the Rays, are hoping to prevent another season of Baltimore winning the AL East, though. There’s a ton of pressure on the other teams, especially New York.
The Yankees missed the postseason in 2023, but the addition of Juan Soto has people buzzing. The Yankees themselves are in desperate need of a strong season, along with them making a ton of noise in the playoffs. Regardless of how things turn out, MLB betting in Maryland is going to be sky-high. As soon as Opening Day gets here too, you can expect the betting handle to be moving in the right direction.
