2022 European Women's Handball Championship Contenders | |
Norway | TBA |
France | TBA |
Montenegro | TBA |
Slovenia | TBA |
The Number One Contender: Norway (Odds: TBA)
The reigning European and World Champions, Norway is a juggernaut in the women’s handball world. They also hold the honor in the sport for being the only handball team, on the women’s or the men’s side, to have won the European championship four consecutive times. The Norwegians have dominated the sport as of late, but they do have some dents in their armor, as evidenced by a bronze medal finish at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Norway nonetheless will be the overwhelming favorite going into the tournament and will be aiming for even more history at the European Championship.
Number Two: France (Odds: TBA)
The French seem to have positioned themselves as Norway’s rival in championship games and for good reason. France won their first ever handball Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games and have been at a torrid pace the last couple of years on the women’s international circuit. In 2018, they won their first-ever gold medal at the European Championship and finished in second place at the 2021 World Championship. France will be led by captain Coralie Lassource at the 2022 Tournament and have a ton of momentum heading into the games.
Number three: Montenegro (Odds: TBA)
One of the 2022 tournament co-hosts, along with Slovenia and North Macedonia, Montenegro is aiming for its first European Championship since 2012. Though they finished as a semi-finalist in 2014, Montenegro has had a tougher draw in subsequent European Championships with below average finishes in 2016 (13th place), 2018 (9th) and 2020 (8th). So what will make things different in 2022? Well being led by all-time legend Jovanka Radičević (she holds the Montenegrin national record for most caps and goals) is a great starting point. With the squad already qualifying thanks to co-hosting the event, they will have a little extra motivation.
Final contender: Slovenia (Odds: TBA)
The other co-host country, Slovenia has a dark horse contender vibe to them and could shock the world at the tournament. Led by captain Ana Gros, the Slovenians are a young squad that could upend some of the more veteran teams on this list. With their highest finish at the event coming back in 2004, Slovenia certainly has a lot of ground to make up this year. Crazier things have happened but perhaps this could be the biggest year for the women’s team ever.
Prediction: With a slew of contenders seeking their first ever championship, the favorite will defend their crown as Norway will lock down their fifth consecutive European title.
