Tennessee Volunteers (-250)

Top-ranked Tennessee got off to a strong start, scoring five runs in the opening inning and securing a commanding 10-0 win on Senior Day against Belmont in their midweek clash at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The victory capped off a stellar season in midweek games for Tennessee, finishing with an impressive 13-1 record and outscoring opponents by a notable margin of 155-40. The Volunteers’ pitching staff put on a dominant display, limiting Belmont to just four hits and issuing only two walks while recording their fourth shutout of the season.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Dylan Loy made a solid start, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts before handing over to the bullpen, which conceded just two hits over the next 4.1 innings.

Christian Moore made history by hitting his 24th home run of the season, going back-to-back with Colby Backus to kick off the sixth inning. This solo shot matched UT’s single-season home run record, equalling Sonny Cortez’s mark of 24 set in 1998.

Reese Chapman also contributed with a home run in the Vols’ three-run sixth inning, marking his fifth of the season to cap off the scoring for the night.

Backus and Billy Amick led the team with two hits each. A total of eight different players notched base hits during the game. Hunter Ensley played a key role, scoring two runs and driving in three RBIs with a bases-clearing double in the first inning.

JJ Garcia secured the win to improve his record to 3-0 for the year after pitching 1.1 scoreless relief innings. Freshman left-hander Matthew Dallas also impressed, striking out the side in the fifth inning during his sole inning on the mound. Sophomore right-hander Marcus Phillips closed out with a strong performance, retiring the side in order and recording two strikeouts in the sixth inning.

Belmont’s offensive efforts were led by Sam Slaughter, who had a pair of singles. Starting pitcher Jordan Zuger took the loss for the Bruins, conceding five runs on five hits in just two innings pitched.

South Carolina (+205)

The University of South Carolina baseball team had a mixed week, finishing 1-3 with a win over Winthrop but suffering a sweep against Georgia over the weekend.

Austin Brinling, the fifth-year senior, continued his impressive performance at the top of the lineup. He went 4-for-5 with his first home run as a Gamecock in Tuesday’s victory over Winthrop. Brinling then had a strong showing against Georgia, going 6-for-13 at the plate with four runs scored and three walks, including four hits in Saturday’s game.

Kennedy Jones was a key offensive contributor, driving in eight runs during the week’s first two games. He recorded five RBIs, including a home run, in the Winthrop win and followed it up with a three-RBI performance against Georgia on Thursday. Jones now boasts 46 RBIs for the season.

Blake Jackson leads the team with a .310 batting average and has contributed significantly with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs, and 23 RBIs, while also leading in stolen bases with 15. Jackson had three hits and scored three runs during the Georgia series.
