Mariners Are Hoping to Upset the Angels with Shohei Ohtani Pitching

While both teams haven’t quite lived up to the hype this season, there’s a big series on the way between the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels this week. Now would be a great time for both AL West clubs to try and get hot, as they’re hoping to book their trips to the postseason this fall. On Friday night, there’s a great duel on the way, as the Mariners are hoping to upset the Angels with Shohei Ohtani pitching.

Normally, we’d think that the Angels would cruise to a win with Ohtani on the bump, as he’s one of the best starters in the American League. However, Seattle is setting this one up to be a memorable showdown, as they’ll be giving ace hurler Luis Castillo the starting nod. Castillo himself is one of the top hurlers in the game and he’s going to want to make a statement going up against Ohtani.

This game is being played in Anaheim, so Ohtani and Co. are expected to come away with a win by a lot of experts and analysts. The Mariners are going to have a tough time trying to record hits and runs off of Ohtani, but the same could be said for the Angels hitters in trying to make magic happen going up against Castillo. All in all, this could prove to be a pitching battle between the two studs.

According to the best-rated sportsbooks, which includes the reliable Bovada review, the Angels hold -115 MLB bettingย odds to post a win on Friday night. The Mariners have been set with +125 betting odds. From our chair, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Angels were to post a victory, but we’ve got a feeling that Castillo will have a game to remember and silence the LA bats. With that said, we’re going with the Mariners as our pick.

The under should hit between the Mariners and Angels

Entering play, we think the under should hit between the Mariners and Angels on Friday night. As we mentioned above, both Castillo and Ohtani are considered two of the top pitchers in the AL. Whenever they’re on the bump, they are both ready to put on a show with the ball in their hands. With Castillo, he made his way to Seattle last season ahead of the MLB trade deadline and he’s been brilliant ever since.

With Castillo leading the way for the rotation, Seattle’s pitching has been fantastic. The issue for the club, though, is they have been way too inconsistent at the plate. The good news for the Mariners is that star outfielder Julio Rodriguez is starting to catch fire. The reigning AL Rookie of the Year has been improving his batting average, which has been great to see. On Tuesday night, J-Rod belted a monster homer vs. the Padres – it was awesome.

As for Ohtani, this guy is a threat to make a difference both on the bump and at the plate. Ohtani continues to be the favorite to win AL MVP, as he and Aaron Judge are going to be in quite the race the rest of the season. Judge was just placed on the Injured List with an injured toe. As for Ohtani, he keeps belting impressive dingers and posting strong showings when pitching for the Angels.

With Castillo and Ohtani starting, we think it’ll be a long night at the plate for both the Seattle and LA hitters. The over/under has been set at seven runs. While both lineups have a lot of power and stars featured, Castillo and Ohtani both are going to have great performances in this one. With all of that said, we’d be shocked if more than seven runs are scored. We’re going with the under as our pick.

Mariners and Angels are long shots to win the AL West

When it comes to either of these teams potentially making the playoffs, the Mariners and Angels are long shots to win the AL West. For either Seattle or LA to sneak into the postseason, they’re going to have to do so via an AL Wild Card spot. The Mariners were able to get the monkey off their back last year, snapping a 21-year streak of failing to miss the playoffs. With the Angels, they are ready to try and get back in this campaign.

With Ohtani and Mike Trout being the main star players for the roster, there’s just no reason they should be in a prime spot to fight for a Wild Card berth. Right now, both the Angels and Mariners hold +1800 MLB betting odds to win the AL West. Yeah, it’s not going to happen.

However, the two AL West sides are in a good spot to potentially grab a Wild Card spot. It won’t be easy, and there’s a good chance one of the two will miss out, but you never know what might happen late in the season. If we had to pick one of the teams to make the playoffs, we’d most definitely have to go with the Mariners.
