Phillies Are Favored to Top the Mets in a Big NL East Matchup

• New York Mets vs. Phillies
• Saturday, June 24 at 4:10 PM ET
• Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

We don’t have to tell you, but whenever the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies face off, there’s going to be a ton of intrigue. Luckily for fans out there, the two rivals will be facing off this week in what should be a fun three-game series. There’s going to be a lot of pressure on both sides to try and record a win in each contest. With that said, the Phillies are favored to top the Mets in a big NL East matchup on Saturday.

As things stand, the Mets hold a 34-39 record, while the Phillies are 38-35. It’s been a bit of a surprise that New York hasn’t been performing well, but injuries have definitely gotten in the way of them reaching their potential. Meanwhile for the Phillies, they’ve also dealt with some injuries, but they’re starting to catch their stride. They’ll need both Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber to be close to 100 percent later this season.

As for the Mets, things haven’t quite gone according to plan with Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander as their top two pitchers. For the Saturday tilt against the Phillies, though, they’ll be counting on Carlos Carrasco to try and contain the strong Philly lineup. That won’t be easy, especially with Carrasco struggling quite a bit this year. On the season, the veteran right-handed pitcher has a 2-3 record and a 6.34 ERA. That won’t cut it against the Phillies.

Per the best-rated sportsbooks, which includes the reliable Bovada review, the Phillies hold -115 MLB betting odds to post a victory, while the Mets have been set at +125. We think this will be a close contest and things could go either way. However, with this game being played at Citizens Bank Park, we fully expect the home side to post a victory. With that said, we’re going with the Phillies as our pick.

The over should hit in the Mets vs. Phillies meeting

As we get closer to this contest, the over should hit in the Mets vs. Phillies meeting. As we mentioned above, Carrasco will be getting the start for the Mets and it’s hard to see him having a strong showing in this one. His 6.34 ERA has been quite disappointing to see, as he entered the year expecting to be a strong presence for the pitching staff. That hasn’t been the case, though.

Carrasco has been a bit all over the place with his pitches, which surely is not a good sign as he gets ready to take on the Phillies. Philadelphia is known for both Harper and Schwarber, but they also have other sluggers in the lineup who have the potential to go yard as well. Because of this, we think that the Phillies could end up scoring quite a bit of runs when the two teams meet.

On the other side of things, don’t forget that the Mets have a great lineup too. They feature some quality bats who also have a ton of power. The Phillies will be sending out Zach Wheeler to start – on the year, Wheeler holds a 6-4 record and a 3.48 ERA. Wheeler has been much better than Carrasco this year and that should once again be the case on Saturday. However, we think the Mets can put up several runs too.

Per the oddsmakers, the over/under for Saturday’s tilt has been placed at 6.5 runs. With the way both the Phillies and Mets are able to swing the bats, we have a hard time thinking that the two sides won’t be able to combine for at least seven runs. This truly could end up being a high-scoring affair. With that said, we are definitely going to have to go with the over here, which holds -110 MLB betting odds.

Phillies have a great chance of making the postseason

Remember when we said Philadelphia will need to get healthy toward the end of the campaign? Well, that’s crucial, as the Phillies have a great chance of making the postseason this fall. Again, if this team can be close to 100 percent health later this summer and in September, then it’s going to be fantastic news for the NL East side as a whole. Obviously, plenty of eyes will be on both Schwarber and Harper. They’re not the only ones who will need to be suited up for this club to make a splash.

Right now, the Phillies hold -120 MLB odds to make the postseason. While they don’t have strong World Series betting odds, that doesn’t mean they won’t be a team to keep an eye on if they make the playoffs. Philly surprised everyone by going on a deep run last year, so who’s to say that can’t be the case again in 2023? With so much talent, they really have what it takes to be a force in September and October. We will definitely have our eyes on this team the rest of the way, that’s for sure.
