Gerwyn Price (+400) enters the event as the betting favorite. The IceMan will face stiff competition from the likes of Michael van Gerwen (+450) and World Champion Michael Smith (+1200). In our latest darts betting picks, we preview the action and look at the best bets to place to profit on the tournament.

  • What; 2023 Grand Slam of Darts
  • Who; 32 of the Top Players in the World
  • When; Saturday, November 11th – Sunday, November 19th
  • Where; WV Active Aldersley, Wolverhampton, England

The Grand Slam of Darts is another of the unique events put on by the PDC across the year. Like with the World Grand Prix, where it’s a double in double out format, the Grand Slam also greatly differs as the players compete in groups format for the opening round. There are eight groups of four, all playing round-robin, with the top two from each group going through to the second round when the event becomes a straight knockout.

Up until 2020, the two main darts organizations, the PDC and BDO, jointly hosted the event. Since the demise of the BDO in 2020, the competition is now solely a PDC event.

MVG continues to struggle

In the recent European Tour finals, Michael van Gerwen entered the competition as the betting favorite. MVG again flattered to deceive and went out to compatriot Gian van Veen 10-6 in the quarter-finals with an average of just 93.67.

Also falling at the same stage were Gerwyn Price and Luke Humphries, the other two favorites to win the event alongside MVG.

Betting to win the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts

As a result of what happened in Dortmund and recent history here in Wolverhampton, Gerwyn Price (+400) finds himself as the favorite to win the Grand Slam of Darts. Price has won this event three times in the last five years, with the last of his wins coming in 2021 against Peter Wright (16-8).

Also amongst the betting favorites is Luke Humphries (+650), who also suffered a disappointing European Tour Finals in Dortmund, losing 10-6 to eventual runner-up James Wade in the last eight.

The fourth favorite in the betting is Michael Smith at +1200. The current World Champion has been struggling in recent weeks. He lost 10-4 to the European Tour Finals winner, Peter Wright, at the second round stage in Dortmund. Bully Boy is the defending champion in this event after defeating Nathan Aspinall 16-5 in the final here 12 months ago.

Some other names to look out for in the betting, include last year’s runner-up, Nathan Aspinall (+2000), and recent European Tour Finals winner Peter Wright (+1200).

2023 Grand Slam of Darts Group Draw

The 32 players will start the competition in eight groups of four. Three-times winner Michael van Gerwen has ended up in an entertaining-looking Group G with one of his old rivals, Rob Cross, female superstar Fallon Sherrock, and Martijn Kleermaker. The full draw is:-

  • Group A – (1) Michael Smith, James Wade, Krzysztof Ratajski, Nathan Girvan
  • Group B – (8) Jonny Clayton, Chris Dobey, Josh Rock, Berry van Peer
  • Group C – (4) Luke Humphries, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Gary Anderson, Steve Lennon
  • Group D – (5) Gerwyn Price, Ryan Searle, Gian van Veen, Nathan Rafferty
  • Group E – (2) Peter Wright, Dave Chisnall, Stephen Bunting, Stowe Buntz
  • Group F – (7) Danny Noppert, Andrew Gilding, Brendan Dolan, Haruki Muramatsu
  • Group G – (3) Michael van Gerwen, Rob Cross, Martijn Kleermaker, Fallon Sherrock
  • Group H – (6) Nathan Aspinall, Damon Heta, Ricardo Pietreczko, Beau Greaves

The eight seeds are the players in brackets.

Peter Wright is the in-form player, having just picked up the title in the European Tour Finals. But Snakebite finds himself in a tricky-looking group and is far from certain to qualify. Other seeds who might struggle to come through their groups are Jonny Clayton and Luke Humphries. The other five seeds we see coming through comfortably.

Of those five, who is the most likely to win? Well, it might not be one of the seeds. The likes of James Wade, Chris Dobey, Gary Anderson, and Josh Rock will all believe they can pull off a shock, as will Dave Chisnall – three times winner on the European Tour this year.

Our Picks

For our betting picks, we are going to hedge our bets, and we are looking at two good value bets to win the competition – Dave Chisnall and Nathan Aspinall.

Stephen Bunting could prove to be an awkward opponent in Group E. But if Dave Chisnall can negotiate the group, he looks a good bet to win at +2000. Chisnall has made the final here before, although that was way back in 2014.

For our second pick, we feel that Nathan Aspinall will make it through his group without too many problems. Aspinall made it to the final here last year. He did get well beaten. But he will be better for the experience 12 months on. All this combined leads us to make Nathan Aspinall our second betting pick to win the 2023 Grand Slam of Darts.
