Will Denmark dominate?
Denmark (-105) stands atop the European Handball Federation men’s national team ranking with 448 points, just ahead of Sweden (424) and Spain (400). The rankings were compiled using results from the last three major international events: the 2021 and 2023 Men’s IHF World Championships and the Men’s EHF EURO 2022.
The Danes claimed gold in both 2021 and 2023, becoming the first men’s national handball team to win three consecutive world titles, and captured the bronze medal at Euro 2022.

Sweden defends its title
Sweden (+450) looks to defend its European title after defeating Spain 27-26 in 2022. While it was the nation’s first Euro championship in 20 years, the Swedes lead the all-time gold medal count with five. Most recently, they fell to Spain 39-36 in the bronze medal game of the 2023 world championships on their homecourt in Stockholm. Sweden also lost a hard-fought final (26-24) to Denmark in 2021.
Put simply, the Swedes have played for gold or bronze at the last three major handball events and should be in the mix once again.
Strong showing from Spain?
Spain (+500) has appeared in the last four European Championship finals, winning two golds and two silvers. The last time they failed to medal at the event was in 2012 when they lost the bronze-medal match to Croatia. The Spaniards also claimed consecutive bronze medals at the Worlds, and their men’s youth team just won the world title with a 28-23 victory over Denmark.

Don’t forget about France
France (+600) is coming off a narrow 34-29 loss to Denmark in the final of the 2023 World Championships. While the nation hasn’t medaled at the Euros since 2018, they took the Danes to extra time in the 2022 bronze medal match before falling 35-32.
The French last won this event in 2014, however, they are a traditional powerhouse with three gold medals, second only to Sweden. France also tops the all-time gold medal (6) and total medal (12) count at the worlds, so +600 is strong value.
Best Bet
While it’s hard to decipher why this happens, Denmark is simply not as good at the Euros as they are at the Worlds, where they’ve won three world titles in a row. Meanwhile, the exact opposite is the case for a Spanish team that’s played in a medal match at six-straight European championships.
We’ll take Spain to win their third European men’s handball title in January 2024.
