Big upsets in Blackpool
The wave of big upsets at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, England hasn’t deterred oddsmakers. Gerwyn Price (+350), Michael van Gerwen (+350) and Michael Smith (+400) remain the heavy favorites to win the 2024 World Darts Championship despite all three suffering shocking defeats at the World Matchplay event in July.
2021 champion Price and 2022 champion Smith were upset by Joe Cullen (13-11) and Chris Dobey (11-7) in the second round, while the Dutchman lost his opening round match to Brendan Dolan (10-7). van Gerwen is looking for his fourth World Darts Championship after wins in 2014, 2017 and 2019.

Nathan Aspinall capitalizes
Nathan Aspinall (+2500) captured the 2023 World Matchplay title with a 18-6 triumph over Jonny Clayton (+1800) in the final. The 32-year-old has also enjoyed some past success at the World Darts Championship. Before losing in the third round of the event in three-consecutive years, he made the semifinals in both 2019 and 2020.
Clayton reached the quarter-finals of this event in 2023 and lost a hard-fought 4-3 match to eventual finalist Michael Smith back in 2022.
Other fringe contenders
Luke Humphries (+1600) fell 17-15 to Clayton in the World Matchplay semifinals. “Cool Hand Luke” has reached three World Championship quarterfinals in five years and was defeated in the fourth round in 2023.
Peter Wright (+1600) won this event in 2020 and 2022. The Scotsman lost 11-8 to Ryan Searle in the second round of the World Matchplay. The world No. 2 also had an early exit at the New Zealand Darts Masters last weekend after a stunning defeat to truck driver Jonny Tata.

School of Rock
Josh Rock (+2000) picked up three victories in his World Darts Championship debut in 2023 before losing 4–3 to Jonny Clayton in the fourth round. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland also won the 2022 PDC World Youth Championship. However, he suffered a first round loss to Damon Heta in World Matchplay in July.
Best Longshot
Joe Cullen (+4000) made it all the way to the semifinals at Winter Gardens, losing 17-9 to eventual winner Nathan Aspinall. The Englishman has shaky resume at the World Darts Championship to say the least, losing in the first or second round in 10 of 13 appearances.
That said, “the Rockstar” has advanced to the fourth round in two of the past three years and his 2022 Masters title isn’t all that long ago.
