MVG favored to win record fifth darts European Championship

Michael van Gerwen (+350) is the favorite to win the 2023 European Championship darts from Dortmund in Germany this weekend. The event marks the end of the 2023 European Tour, with the top 32 players from the previous 13 competitions qualifying to take part. In our latest darts betting picks, we are going to tell you, if not MVG, then who is the best bet to win the competition?

  • What; 2023 PDC Machineseeker European Championship
  • Who; Top 32 Players on European Tour Order of Merit
  • When; Thursday, October 26th – Sunday, October 29th
  • Where; Westfalenhalle, Dortmund, Germany

Yes, there have been 13 events across Europe in 2023, and they were all part of the European Tour of Merit. Points are handed out at each event, with the top 32-point scorers all qualifying to play in the season-ending competition in Dortmund this weekend. Just to be clear, this isn’t the end of the darts season, just the European Tour.

The most recent competition was the 2023 German Darts Championship, held in Hildesheim at the start of the month. Germany’s Ricardo Pietreczko was the shock winner. He defeated Peter Wright 8-4 in the final to win his first European Tour event in the PDC.

The other winners in 2023 have been Dave Chisnall (3 times), Gerwyn Price (2), Rob Cross, Michael Smith, Jonny Clayton, Michael van Gerwen, Peter Wright, Luke Humphries, and Krzysztof Ratajski.

Dave Chisnall enters the season-ending competition as the number-one seed. But as you’re about to see, he’s far from the betting favorite with the best darts betting sites.

MVG looking for his fifth title

Leading the way with the best online betting sites in Michael van Gerwen at +350. The Dutchman has won this event a record four times. He shares the record with the legendary Phil Taylor. His four wins came in succession from 2014 to 2017. Since his last win, MVG has only made the final once, losing 11-8 to Rob Cross in the final back in 2021.

Price looking to go one better

Second in the betting is Welshman Gerwyn Price. The Iceman is +400 to win the event for the first time in his career. Price’s previous best showing here was in 2019 when he lost 11-6 to Rob Cross in the final.

Price has been one of the most consistent performers on the PDC roster this year. Time and time again, the Iceman has made it through to the finals of events. If he can start turning more of these final appearances into wins, then it almost becomes scary to think just how successful this man can be in the future.

Humphries is now up there with the best in the PDC

Another player yet to win this competition, but among the betting favorites, is Luke Humphries at +450. Humphries has never made the final here. He has only started establishing himself as a force in the PDC over the past 18 months.

Humphries won the European Darts Matchplay at the start of June with an 8-7 win over Dirk van Duijvenbode. But his real breakthrough came when he defeated Gerwyn Price to win the World Grand Prix at the start of October.

Other names in with a chance

Rob Cross is another name to look out for when the action gets started. Cross is +1600 to win this event for a third time. The two-time winner also made the final here in 2017 when he lost to Michael van Gerwen, the Dutchman’s last win in this event.

Current World Champion Michael Smith is +800 to win this event for the first time, and European Order of Merit winner and top seed Dave Chisnall is +2000 to add the main event to the three European titles he has already won this year.

Our Picks to Win

There is some talent on show in Dortmund this weekend. The obvious favorite is Michael van Gerwen. Everyone knows that if all the players are at the top of their game, then MVG is the best. MVG can’t seem to stay consistent though. One day, he is unbeatable, and the next, he is struggling to hit a double.
It’s frustrating because if he is on song, he is a great pick. But we just can’t trust him.

For our betting picks, we are going to hedge our bets and we are looking at two, maybe even three, names. The two we would recommend backing are Gerwyn Price (+400) and Luke Humphries (+450). Both men are in great form, as their appearances in the final of the World Grand Prix less than a month ago can testify.

Outside Betting Pick

But another name to throw into the mix is two-time winner Rob Cross. The man known as Voltage won the European Darts Grand Prix in May and has been in good form this year. He has three appearances in the final in this event and likes the format, and at +1600, he is a good value pick.
