Back Michael van Gerwen to win Third Section at 2024 PDC World Darts Championship

We have to wait until Tuesday 19th, to see Michael van Gerwen in action at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship. And when he gets his campaign underway against the winner of Keane Barry versus Reynaldo Rivera, Mighty Mike will be looking for his fourth world title. MVG has been drawn in Section 3, which puts him in the bottom half of the draw. The Dutch darting maestro is +110 to win his section, and here we assess his chances in our latest darts betting picks.

  • What; 2024 PDC World Darts Championship
  • When; Friday, December 15th, 2023 – Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024
  • Where; Alexandra Palace, London, England

The draw for the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship was made at the end of November, and it’s put Michael van Gerwen in Section 3. It also sees him in the bottom half of the draw, which puts him on a potential collision course with the in-form player in World Darts, Luke Humphries, in the semi-final.

Last year’s beaten finalist, van Gerwen is the second seed this year. Being in the bottom half of the draw keeps him away from Gerwyn Price, defending champion Michael Smith, and 2020 and 2022 champion Peter Wright.

There is no easy path to the final of the World Darts Championship, given the quality of players in the PDC these days. But there are less difficult paths, and MVG seems to have found himself on one this year. And this makes him a good bet to win his quarter this year.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship?

Before we go onto the betting to win MVG’s section, let’s take a quick look at the betting to win the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship.

The in-form player in world darts at the moment is Luke Humphries. The Englishman has won three ranking events in the past six weeks, and as a result, the bookmakers have made him the favorite to win the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship.

Humphries is +325 to win his first-ever world title. MVG is the second favorite at +400, with Gerwyn Price at +550. Defending champion Michael Smith is +1200, with Gary Anderson at +1400, Rob Cross at +1600, and Peter Wright at +2000. All the favorites except for Humphries are past winners.

Betting to win Section 3 at the 2024 PDC World Darts Championship

The top 32 players in the PDC don’t enter the competition until round two. This is why we don’t know who MVG will be playing in round two, as Keane Barry will take on Reynaldo Rivera in round one for the right to take on the Dutchman.

Neither player is expected to provide a challenge for van Gerwen, who is +110 to win the section. The highest seed in MVG’s section is fellow Dutchman Danny Noppert, who is number seven and fourth favorite at +1000. If both men progress, they will meet in the quarter-final.

And it’s the quarter-final that is also the earliest that MVG could meet the second favorite, Josh Rock. Rock is +650 to upset MVG again.

The young Northern Irishman has a 7-0 whitewash of MVG to his name in 2023. That was in a European Tour final, which is played in legs format. But the World Championship is in a set format, and this changes the landscape of the match, playing into the hands of MVG.

Third in the betting is Stephen Bunting at +800. Bunting could meet MVG in the fourth round. And with the Englishman in good form of late, he could provide a stern test for van Gerwin.

Inconsistent MVG

In the recent European Tour finals, van Gerwen started the competition as the bookmakers’ favorite. Fellow Dutchman Gian van Veen defeated Mighty Mike 10-6 in the quarter-finals, with the three-time world champion again underperforming.

Then, in the recent Players Championship final, van Gerwen looked back to his best. He coasted through the opening rounds before being pushed by Stephen Bunting in the quarter-final, only winning 10-9. But then MVG made light work of Gabriel Clemens, defeating the Belgian 11-6 in the semi-final.

This gave us the final we craved, MVG against Luke Humphries. Van Gerwen was on fire in the early part and completed a nine-darter on his way to a 9-5 lead. Then MVG’s form inexplicably fell off a cliff, and he looked like a different player. This allowed Luke Humphries back into the match, and he reeled off six legs in a row to defeat MVG 11-9.

And it’s this hot and cold nature of MVG lately that prevents us from picking him to win big titles. When on form in the final, MVG looked a class above Humphries. But van Gerwen struggles to consistently produce that form.

Our Pick

Despite that, Michael van Gerwen is our betting pick to win his section at the World Darts Championship. Even out of form, he is good enough to – at the very least – win the quarter-finals of this year’s competition, and that would be enough for our pick to win.
