Ronnie O’Sullivan cut to win defining eighth World Championship and sweep the Triple Crown events

After another sensational win at the 2024 Masters, Ronnie O’Sullivan has been cut in the latest snooker futures betting to win the 2024 World Championship and sweep Snooker’s Triple Crown events in the 2023/24 season. The Rocket’s odds have been dramatically cut from +400 to +275 on the back of his win over Ali Carter, and now he needs to win the 2024 World Championship to complete the Triple Crown in the same season for the first time in his illustrious career.

  • What; 2024 World Championship
  • When; Saturday, April 20th – Monday, May 6th, 2024
  • Where; Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, England
  • Defending Champion; Luca Brecel
  • 2024 Favorite to Win; Ronnie O’Sullivan +275

Yes, even the great Ronnie O’Sullivan has never won the Triple Crown of the UK Championship, Masters, and World Championship in the same season. Granted, the Rocket has won a combined 23 Triple Crown events across his career, more than anybody else, but never has he won all three in one season.

This has only ever been achieved on four occasions. Steve Davis first did it in the 1987/88 season. Stephen Hendry then completed the sweep in 1989/90 and again in 19995/96. Hendry is the only player to have achieved the feat twice. And finally, Mark Williams managed it in the 2002/03 season.

This is something that Ronnie has never achieved, and will he ever have a better chance of doing it than he has this season?

The Rocket was favored ahead of his Masters win, but he was +400. For comparison, leading into the competition in 2023, O’Sullivan was the joint favorite at +450, alongside Judd Trump.

And it’s again Judd Trump who is expected to be O’Sullivan’s biggest rival in 2024. Trump is the +450 second favorite to win the title for a second time in his career later this year. Behind Trump is four-times winner Mark Selby. Selby is +550, which is shorter than he was last year (+750).

In 2023, Neil Robertson was the third favorite at +600. The 2011 champion is nowhere to be seen in the current betting, down at +1600, showing just how far behind the Aussie has fallen in recent months.

Mark Allen is fourth in the betting at +1200, just ahead of the 2023 champ, Luca Brecel, and 2005 winner Shaun Murphy, who are both +1400.

O’Sullivan can make history twice in one go!

As well as being virtually unbeatable when he’s on song, there are more reasons why Ronnie O’Sullivan is now becoming a very short-priced favorite to win the 2024 World Championship.

As we have already alluded to, there is the opportunity for the Rocket to sweep the Triple Crown events for the first time in the same season. But if O’Sullivan does lift the trophy in Sheffield this May, it will also be for the eighth time in his career, putting him one win ahead of Stephen Hendry, with whom he currently shares seven wins.

Hendry is the one-name snooker fans throw up when there is a debate about who is the greatest player ever to pick up a cue. An eighth win for O’Sullivan would surely nail that debate once and for all.

Can anyone stop the Rocket?

Although Ronnie O’Sullivan has won the World Championship seven times, he will be the first person to say it isn’t easy. He first won the title in 2001. It almost sounds stupid to say, but in the following 22 World Championships, he has only won six more of them. Outstanding as it is, it means Ronnie hasn’t won 16 titles over those years.

Stephen Hendry won seven titles between 1990 and 1999, a phenomenal achievement. But the point is, being the best player in the world doesn’t guarantee O’Sullivan the title. He has failed to win it more often than he has won it. That’s not a criticism. It’s to point out how hard it is to win the World Championship.

The likes of Judd Trump, Luca Brecel, Shaun Murphy, Neil Robertson, Mark Allen, and Mark Selby are capable of winning the title. And as was proven in 2023, when Brecel came from behind to defeat O’Sullivan 13-10 in their quarter-final, it only takes one session to lose a World Championship. Brecel reeled off seven frames in a row to beat the Rocket. A freak result? Maybe. But it just shows how it can happen.

2024 Snooker World Championship Picks

It’s too early to be naming betting picks for an event that doesn’t start until April. But it’s highly unlikely that O’Sullivan’s odds will get any shorter between now and then. So, if you want to back him, it may be worth waiting and hoping he loses early in a couple of upcoming competitions. Or a big name hits form and forces the bookmakers to lengthen their odds on the Rocket.

But if you wish to secure your price, then back him now. But for us, the value bets at the moment look to be Mark Allen at +1200 and Ding Junhui at +2000.
