O’Sullivan trying to make history

Qualifying begins on April 8th for the 2024 World Snooker Championship. Of the 128 players, 16 will advance to the main stage at the Crucible Theatre, where they will be randomly drawn to face the top 16 players in the world rankings.

Back in 2022, Ronnie O’Sullivan (+300) became the oldest champion in tournament history when he captured his seventh world title at the age of 46. Two years later, he’s still the world’s No. 1 ranked player. Winning an eighth career world championship in Sheffield, England would break his tie with Stephen Hendry.

Big name contenders

World No. 2 Judd Trump (+400) is coming off a 10-4 defeat to Mark Williams (+2500) in the quarterfinal of the Tour Championship. He last won this event in 2019. The four-time triple crown winner fell to O’Sullivan for the fifth-consecutive time at the World Masters of Snooker. However, he rebounded by defending his title at the 2024 World Open.

Mark Selby (+750) is a four-time world champion with triumphs in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2021. The 40-year-old has struggled since winning the Championship League in March, most recently losing to Gary Wilson in the first round of the Tour Championship.

Other notables

Mark Allen (+1200) is still looking for his first world title after losing to Selby 17-15 in the semi-finals last year. The man from Northern Ireland has two triple crowns and 11 ranking titles.

Neil Robertson (+1200) is in the midst of a tough season. The Thunder from Down Under has not even made the quarter-finals in a ranking tournament, suffering early exits at the UK Championship and the Masters.

Luca Brecel (+1800) just won the World Mixed Doubles title with Reanna Evans. The reigning world champion says he almost missed the final after he parked his car in the wrong area and it was towed.

Best Longshot

Mark Williams (+2500) is the best bet on the board considering his brilliant performance at the Tour Championship, where he showed he’s up for the challenge against top players like Judd Trump and Mark Allen.
