The 2023 MotoGP season is winding down, and the battle to take home the title remains a three-man race with defending champion Francesco Bagnaia leading the way. Also in the mix are Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi. This weekend, the MotoGP riders visit the Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand, for the 2023 OR Thailand Grand Prix. This week’s race comes on the heels of last week’s MotoGP Guru by Gryfyn Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in Australia. Johann Zarco won that competition, finishing .201 seconds ahead of Bagnaia. Fabio Di Giannantonio placed third. Martin and Bezzecchi finished in fifth and sixth place in Australia.

MotoGP returned to Thailand in 2022 after missing the 2020 and 2021 races due to the pandemic. Last year, Miguel Oliveira won that race in Thailand, with Jack Miller placing second. Bagnaia finished the race in third place. Marc Marquez won in the Thailand GP in 2018 and 2019.

Francesco Bagnaia

Not long ago, Francesco Bagnaia had a 66-point lead over the MotoGP pack. That cushion made the 26-year-old Ducati rider an overwhelming favorite to repeat as the MotoGP champion. However, Bagnaia hit a rough patch between Week 11 and Week 13 of the 2023 MotoGP season. During those three weeks he did not start Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, finished third at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, and crashed out of the IndianOil Grand Prix of India. The defending champion bounced back in his three most recent races, winning the Motul Grand Prix of Japan and finishing as the runner-up in the Indonesian GP and in Australia.

Bagnaia’s runner-up finish last week gave him something of a cushion. He entered that race 18 points ahead of Jorge Martin and 63 ahead of Marco Bezzecchi. He is now 27 points ahead of Martin and 73 in front of Bezzecchi. However, he is by no means a lock to walk away with back-to-back titles. If Bagnaia loses focus or slips up down the stretch, MotoGP could have a new champion in 2023.

Jorge Martin

Barring an enormous drop-off, Jorge Martin will have the best year of his young MotoGP career in 2023. The 25-year-old, who raced his first full season of MotoGP in 2022, finished in 9th place last year with 152 points. This year, Martin has three wins and 339 points, which puts him very close to the points leader, Francesco Bagnaia, who has 366 points. The 2023 MotoGP championship remains a possibility for Martin, but he needs a strong finish in Thailand. Martin finished in ninth place last year in this race.

Martin had an incredible stretch between Week 11 and Week 14 of the 2023 MotoGP season. During that stretch, he picked up two wins, a runner-up and a third-place finish. However, things went awry for Martin in Indonesia when he crashed out of the race on lap 12. Because he did not finish, Martin left the race with zero points. He got back on track last week with a fifth-place finish in Australia, but if he hopes to gain ground on Bagnaia, Martin needs to improve on that this week in Thailand.

Marco Bezzecchi

Marco Bezzecchi is a long shot to win the 2023 MotoGP championship, but the 24-year-old is still in the running to do so. After a runner-up finish at the San Marino and Rimini Riviera motorcycle Grand Prix, Bezzecho picked up a win in India. However, he has lost ground over the past three races, with his best finish being fourth place in Japan. In his two most recent outings, Bezzecchi placed fifth and sixth. He needs to pick up another win or two in the final four races of the 2023 MotoGP season if he hopes to contend for the title.

Bezzecchi qualified first in Thailand last year, but he finished in 16th place in the race. He needs to make a massive improvement in 2023.
