With three races remaining in the 2023 MotoGP season, the championship remains up for grabs as only 13 points separate the top two riders. Francesco Bagnaia leads the way, but Jorge Martin is not far behind. This weekend, the MotoGP riders visit the Petronas Sepang International Circuit in Sepang, Malaysia, for the 2023 edition of the Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia. Last year, Bagnaia won the race, while Martin, who qualified in the top spot, crashed out of the competition on lap six.

The Petronas Sepang International Circuit first hosted MotoGP in 2002. Valentino Rossi, who retired at the end of the 2021 MotoGP season, holds the record for most wins on the course with five. Among active riders, Marc Marquez and Johann Zarco have the most victories on the course with two. Andrea Dovizioso was the last rider to win back-to-back at the Malaysian GP in 2016 and 2017. Bagnaia looks to add his name to the short list of back-to-back and two-time winners at the 2023 Malaysian GP. The 2020 and 2021 races were canceled because of the pandemic.

Jorge Martin

Jorge Martin is in the mix to win the MotoGP title as the season nears its end. The 25-year-old, who finished his first two MotoGP seasons in ninth place, is 13 points behind points leader Francesco Bagnaia heading into Sunday’s Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia. The Prima Pramac Racing rider is the betting favorite this weekend after his Thailand win. That victory was Martin’s fourth of the year.

Martin has been dominant since the 2023 Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix. He placed fifth, third, and second and had three wins since that race. The only race he didn’t place in the top five in the past seven competitions was when he failed to finish in Indonesia.

Martin did not finish the race in Malaysia in 2022, but he had a win there under the Moto3 banner in 2018, and he finished in second place in 2017.

Francesco Bagnaia

Francesco Bagnaia’s grasp on the MotoGP points lead is slipping. No long ago, Bagnaia had a 66-point lead over the MotoGP pack. That cushion made the 26-year-old Ducati rider an overwhelming favorite to repeat as the MotoGP champion. However, Bagnaia hit a rough patch between Week 11 and Week 13 of the 2023 MotoGP season. During those three weeks he did not start Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, finished third at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, and crashed out of the IndianOil Grand Prix of India. The defending champion bounced back in his four most recent races, winning the Motul Grand Prix of Japan and finishing as the runner-up in the Indonesian GP, Australia and Thailand.

Bagnaia’s runner-up finish would have helped him, but Martin won that race and gained ground on Bagnaia. The pressure is on Bagnaia as the 2023 MotoGP season heads toward its conclusion.

Marco Bezzecchi

Marco Bezzecchi is not officially out of the running to win the 2023 MotoGP championship, but with him being out of the top three in the past four races, he is a  long shot to win that title. After a runner-up finish at the San Marino and Rimini Riviera motorcycle Grand Prix, the 24-year-old picked up a win in India. However, he has lost ground over the past four races, with his best finishes being fourth place in Japan and Thailand.

Bezzecchi placed fourth in Malaysia last year, so he should be in the mix on the course this year as well.

Best betting picks for the 2023 Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia

Despite Jorge Martin’s surge as the 2023 MotoGP nears its close, we are going with Francesco Bagnaia as our betting pick to win on Sunday. He is always a threat to win, he triumphed on this course last year, and he presents better betting value than Martin, who enters the race as the betting favorite.

Best 2023 Petronas Grand Prix of Malaysia betting pick: Francesco Bagnaia to win.
