Two-time MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia picked up his second win of the 2024 MotoGP season in late April in Spain. With his victory, the reigning champion moved from fifth place in the standings into second place. With 75 points, Bagnaia still trails points leader Jorge Martin by 17 points heading into Sunday’s French Grand Prix race in Le Mans. Martin left the race in Spain on lap 10 because of an accident. In 2023, Marco Bezzecchi won the MotoGP French GP, while Martin finished as the runner-up. Bagnaia started on the pole, but he was involved in a collision in the fourth lap and did not complete the race.

The Le Mans Bugatti Grand Prix Race Circuit is a 4.19 km course with nine right corners and five left corners. The turns on the course are tight and force the riders to downshift and break hard. The longest straightaway on the track is 674 meters. Bagnaia holds the all-time lap record at 1:30:45 (166.5 Km/h), which he set in 2022 during qualifying. The reigning MotoGP world champ also has the best lap on the circuit, which again came in 2022 at 1:31:778 (164.1 Km/h). Brad Binder set the top speed on the course in 2023 at 325.8 Km/h.

The French Grand Prix is the fifth race of the 2024 MotoGP season. Bagnaia has two wins this year, while Martin and Maverick Vinales have wins in the other two competitions.

Jorge Martin

Jorge Martin, who rides a Ducati for Prima Pramac Racing, has started the 2024 MotoGP season strong. Martin’s shaky start in 2023, when he failed to finish two of the first three races, was one of the reasons he finished second to Francesco Bagnaia in the overall standings. If Martin can remain as consistent as he has been in 2024, he could pick up his first MotoGP championship at the end of the 2024 season.

Martin has started two races in France. In his first race, which came in 2022, he dropped out after an accident in lap 16. In 2023, Martin finished as the runner up to Marco Bezzecchi.

An aggressive rider, Martin finished 2023 with four Grand Prix victories, including three of the last nine races of the year. He started every grand prix in 2023 but had four races that he did not finish. That aggressiveness might have been one of the causes of his crash in Spain when he was defending the lead over Bagnaia.

If Martin is not careful with his braking during Sunday’s MotoGP race, he could find himself in danger of losing his top spot in the MotoGP standings.

Francesco Bagnaia

The two-time MotoGP champion, Francesco Bagnaia, is in second place in the overall standings in 2024 with 75 points for the year. Bagnaia won the first race of 2024, but he failed to finish in Portugal. In Austin, the defending champ placed fifth. He got back to the top of the podium in Spain. Bagnaia has been the dominant force in MotoGP over the past three years, winning two world titles and picking up 18 grand prix race victories. Look for him to come into this race confident, as he has performed well in Spain, winning in 2022 and 2023 and placing second in 2021.

Bagnaia’s retirement in Portugal marked the first time he did not place in the top three in a MotoGP race since he failed to finish the IndianOil Grand Prix of India in September 2023. Bagnaia had not had two worse finishes in back-to-back races since he placed 16th in Argentina in failed to finish the Grand Prix of the Americas in April 2023. The last time Bagnaia had three straight finishes outside the top four was in the early stages of the 2022 season when he placed 15th, fifth, fifth, and eighth. He avoided that fate and showed his championship acumen by winning in Spain.

Bagnaia, who rides for Ducati Lenovo, has five starts in France. He’s only finished two races (2020 and 2021), and his best placement was in 2021 when he finished in fourth. In 2020, he placed 13th.

Marc Marquez

Marc Marquez began the 2024 season with a new team. After 11 years with Honda, the 30-year-old is now on a Ducati for Gresini Racing. Marquez was dominant between 2013 and 2019, winning six world titles and placing third in 2015, the only year during that stretch when he failed to win the world championship. Things haven’t gone his way since then, as he has only won three races in the past three years. He had zero victories in 2022 and 2023. His best placing in 2023 was third in Japan.

Marquez performed well in the first race of 2024, placing fourth in Qatar. However, he dropped to 16th in Portugal and was forced out of the race in Austin after an accident on the 10th lap. Marquez placed second in Spain in his most recent outing, finishing 0.372 seconds behind Bagnaia. That finish should put to rest any questions fans have about the veteran riders’ abilities in 2024. Marquez has three career wins in France. He placed sixth in his most recent complete race in France, which came in 2022.
