With every team in the NHL only playing divisional games this season, the East has been a hotly-contested battleground for recent Stanley Cup winners looking to make one last postseason run.
Alex Ovechkin and the 2018 Cup Champs in Washington are in tight race with Sidney Crosby and the Penguins, who are starting to resemble their championship clubs from 2009, 2016 and 2017. No stranger to Cup Finals themselves, the Bruins are also still lurking with just over a handful of games to play.
Let’s take a look at the latest division odds and make our prediction on who will win the East. Also, be sure to check out our NHL betting tips page for tips and advice on how to wager on hockey.

Where things stand today
The Capitals (-165) and Penguins (+175) were co-favorites heading into Tuesday night’s action, but after a Washington win over the Islanders (+1200) and a Pittsburgh loss to the Bruins (+900), Alex Ovechkin and company now lead the East standings by one point over the Pens with one game in hand.
The two teams play a back-to-back on Thursday and Saturday, so Sidney Crosby’s club still has an excellent opportunity to claim the division, especially since their last two games are against the bottom-dwelling Sabres. Washington, on the other hand, will have to face off with the red-hot Rangers twice next week before wrapping up their season against the Bruins on May 11.
The Penguins ended their five-game homestand with a 4-1 record. Next up is a two-game set against the Capitals in Washington. https://t.co/T3NezK76LJ

The Penguins lead the season series but three of their four victories over the Capitals have come in overtime or the shootout. To give themselves an opportunity to capture the division crown, Pittsburgh might have to win both of their upcoming games in Washington in regulation so their opponents aren’t awarded the extra point.
Are Bruins worth betting on?
Available at +1200 on Bovada, Boston sits six points back of the Capitals with one game in hand. Working in their favor is while Washington has no gimmies down the stretch, the Bruins next four games come against the Sabres and Devils, two of the worst three teams in the entire NHL.
Bruce Cassidy’s club has struggled with New Jersey this season with four losses in six games, but if Boston can take care of business over the next week they could at least make it interesting heading into their game against the Capitals on the final night of the NHL season.

Ultimately, however, the Bruins will be hard-pressed to leapfrog two teams with just over a handful of games to play. While the Capitals are in the driver’s seat, Pittsburgh is probably the better value as of today.
