Two of the top teams in the NHL’s Eastern Conference meet tonight at TD Garden when the Carolina Hurricanes face the Boston Bruins. The Bruins are in first place in the Atlantic Division with a 29-8-9 record. As for the Hurricanes, they sit in third place in the Metropolitan Division with a 2024 season mark of 25-15-5. Boston finished the 2023 season with the best record in the Eastern Conference. Carolina has had the best record in the Metropolitan Divison for the past two seasons.
The Bruins lost some key players in the offseason. Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci retired, while Taylor Hall and Dmitry Orlov were traded. The Carolina Hurricanes have been without starting goaltender Frederik Andersen for most of the season. The 34-year-old had a 4-1 record with a 2.87 goals against average and .894 save percentage before he left the team in early November to deal with blood clotting issues. Pyotr Kochetkov was playing well for the ‘Canes (2.58 GAA, .900 SV %), but he’s been out of the lineup since early January with a concussion. Antti Raanta has started the club’s past six games. He has a 3.20 GAA and a .866 SV %.
Sebastian Aho leads the team in scoring with 51 points, 16 goals, and 35 assists. The 26-year-old is the bright spot on the Hurricanes, and he is projected to set a career-high in points and assists this season. Seth Jarvis is second on the team in points with 34. Off-season signing Michael Bunting is the third-highest scorer on the club with 30 points.
Carolina is averaging 3.40 goals per game this year while giving up 3.02. They have scored 154 goals and surrendered 139. The Hurricanes have the third-best power play in the league at 27 percent and the sixth-best penalty kill (83.3 percent)
