2024 NHL Futures: Carolina Hurricanes are The Favorites to Win the Stanley Cup

  • Despite being swept by the Florida Panthers in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, the Carolina Hurricanes are the 2024 Stanley Cup betting favorites.
  • The 2023-24 NHL season begins on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.
  • Will the Stanley Cup return to Canada in 2024? The Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs are in the mix.

With the 2023-24 NHL season set to kick off on Tuesday, October 10, it’s time to look at the betting odds, picks, and predictions for the 2024 Stanley Cup. Last year, the NHL season ended with the Las Vegas Golden Knights winning their first Stanley Cup. The team’s defense of the most prized trophy in professional sports begins with the club raising their first Stanley Cup championship banner before facing the Seattle Kraken on opening night of the 2024 NHL season.

Before the 2023 NHL regular season opened, the Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs were the only teams listed at less than +1000 to win the Cup. This year, there are five teams with odds of +1000 or better, including the defending Stanley Cup champions and one Canadian club. Those teams are the Carolina Hurricanes, Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils, and the Golden Knights.

With the 2024 NHL regular season starting with three games on opening night: Nashville Predators vs. Tampa Bay Lightning, Chicago Blackhawks vs. Pittsburgh Penguins, and Kraken vs. Golden Knights, here is a look at the 2024 Stanley Cup Futures. Carolina Hurricanes

Over the summer, the Carolina Hurricanes, who the Florida Panthers swept in the Eastern Conference Finals, were not the favorite to win the 2024 Stanley Cup. The winners of the 2006 saw their betting odds improve heading into the 2024 NHL season, and they are now the betting favorites to win the Cup this year.

Carolina was aggressive in free agency, signing Michael Bunting from the Toronto Maple Leafs after he put up 46 goals and 112 points over the two previous seasons while playing with Auston Matthews and Mitchell Marner. The team also inked defenseman Dmitry Orlov from the Bruins. The third notable free agent to sign with the team was Brendan Lemieux, who split time between Los Angeles and Philadelphia last season. The club also re-signed goaltenders Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta and got captain Jordan Staal to sign on for four more years. There is also hope that Andrei Svechnikov, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury in March, will be available for most of the 2024 NHL campaign.

The Hurricanes are the only team that has been among the top three in the overall NHL regular season standings over the past three years.

Colorado Avalanche

The bad news for the Colorado Avalanche is that the team will be without their captain Gabriel Landeskog, for a second straight season. Landeskog, who was last seen hoisting the Stanley Cup at the end of the 2022 NHL season, underwent his third knee surgery in 14 months in May. The good news is that the team won the Western Conference’s Central Division in 2023 without Landeskog. Colorado finished the year with a 51-24-7 record and 109 points.

In June, Colorado addressed their need for a second-line center when they acquired Ryan Johansen from the Nashville Predators. Johansen scored a respectable 63 points in his last full season of play. A skate cut ended his 2023 season in February. Colorado also added depth by signing Ross Colton, Jonathan Drouin, Tomas Tatar, and Miles Wood.

The Avalanche have an excellent core in Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar. A healthy version of the Colorado Avalanche will contend for the 2024 Stanley Cup, but like last season, the team cannot afford to lose so many man games to injury.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have the best player in the NHL in Connor McDavid. The team might also have the second-best player in the league in Leon Draisaitl. However, after making it to the Western Conference Finals in 2022, the Oilers fell to the Vegas Golden Knights in six games in the second round of the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs. Canadian hockey fans, the Edmonton fan base, players, and ownership won’t be happy with anything less than a trip to the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals. The team is one of the betting favorites to win the Cup this year.

Edmonton picked up Connor Brown in free agency. The 29-year-old averages 16 goals and 40 points per 82 games in the NHL. The Oilers hope that Brown and McDavid can capture some of the chemistry they had with the OHL’s Erie Otters. Brown led the OHL in assists (83) and points (128) in his final year in the league before he joined the Toronto Maple Leafs as a sixth-round pick in the 2012 NHL draft.

The Oilers need secondary scoring if they hope to go deep in the playoffs this year. The club’s top duo will get things done in the regular season, but if McDavid and Draisaitl are the only two players to cover in the postseason, that’s bad news for the team. Also, the club’s goaltending needs to be much more consistent this year if they hope to win the Cup.

Best bet to win the 2024 Stanley Cup

The Carolina Hurricanes looked like they had all the tools to claim the 2023 Stanley Cup, but the team fell short. While the Panthers sweeping them in the Eastern Conference Finals was not the ideal scenario for Carolina, it did show the club, and its management team, what it needed to fix to get back to the Cup Finals. The team addressed many of those issues in the off-season. With that, the Carolina Hurricanes are the betting pick to claim the Stanley Cup in 2024.
