2022 MotoGP Season Recap

Before we get too ahead of ourselves with betting predictions, let’s recap the 2022 MotoGP season — and more importantly, what we’ve learned that can help us the remainder of the year. As of this publish time, we’re about one-third of the way through the 2022 campaign. Six races have been run, while 16 remain on the schedule.

Up until this point, Ducati has dominated the grid. They sit comfortably atop the Constructors’ standings with 131 points. We say comfortably because they’re up 42 points on the next-best team (Yahama) and 48 on the third-place one (Aprilia). Somehow, Ducati has exceeded expectations. The preseason consensus was they had the fastest bike in the grid — but few knew it’d be this good so far.

At the moment, Ducati has three of the top-seven drivers in the whole grid — Enea Bastianini (third place), Francesco Bagnaia (fifth), and Johann Zarco (seventh). Heck, even Jack Miller, who is losing his factory Ducati team seat at the end of the season, is in 11th. As we said before, it’s been mostly domination from this team. The question is, can they keep that torrid place or not for the rest of 2022?

Best Bet To Win 2022 MotoGP Constructors’ Championship

We understand bettors come with different philosophies, but generally speaking, most fall into one of these two categories — risk-averse and risk-taking. That’s why we wanted to give each of those categories a different best bet to win the MotoGP Constructors’ title in 2022. Let’s get into it:

Risk-Averse Bettor — Take Ducati To Win

There’s nothing inherently wrong with sticking with Ducati to win the rest of the way. They are the two-time defending Constructors’ winners for a reason and the second-most successful team of this century, sans Honda. And as we said earlier, they have a multitude of riders constantly in the podium fix.

A bet on Ducati here is a bet on things remaining par for the course. The only buyer beware warning we can think of for that NOT happening is Bastianini, the team’s best driver. Puzzlingly, the Italian is using a 2021-spec MotoGP bike, not the up-to-date iteration the Ducati’s factory riders are using. We’d think he’d take Miller’s factory spot in 2023, but that storyline is something to look out for. It seemingly hasn’t affected Bastianini so far, but hey, that could always change.

So yes, we wouldn’t shoot down anyone that wants to bet on Ducati here. However, just know, with the lead they own right now in the Constructors’, there’s not that much money to be made from taking Ducati to win. Current betting odds, once they’re re-posted online, will be very rich for Ducati — as they should be given their three-year run of dominance in the motorsport.

Risk-Taking Bettors — Choose Yamaha To Pull Off The Upset

Yamaha finished second place a year ago to Ducati and nothing has changed up to this point (they were behind by 48 points in 2021). But if they were to storm back, it would almost squarely be on the back of reigning world champion, Fabio Quartararo.

The champ didn’t start the season out strong at all, but that’s flipped in the past two races. Quartararo won his first 2022 race in Portugal then followed that with a second-place finish in Spain (losing by less than a second, no less). He’s currently atop the championship standings and without question, looks like the rider to beat on the grid. If Quartararo starts stock-piling wins and podium finishes — like he did a year ago — that would help Yamaha make huge gains on Ducati.

However, the risk with taking Yamaha to win the Constructors is everyone else on the team not named Quartararo. Here’s how Yamaha’s other riders have fared this year, based on season standings: 16th (Franco Morbidelli), 20th (Andrea Dovizioso), and 21st (Darryn Binder). That combined 32-point output from the trio is absolutely disastrous. And if you ask Quartararo about it, which the media did recently, he said, “in the end, this is not my problem.” Ouch.

Quartararo is not wrong but it is the problem of risky bettors that want to take Yamaha here instead of Ducati. To win this bet, you realistically need a huge leap in performance from one of the non-Quartararo riders (if not all three) on the team
