The 2022 Capital One Venture X Rose Bowl game sees the No. 6 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes matched up opposite the No. 11 ranked Utah Utes at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The game takes place on New Year’s Day.
Ohio State wrapped up the 2021 NCAA football season with a 10-2 record. The Buckeyes were the No. 1 team in the Big Ten East and had a chance of making the College Football Playoffs, but a 42-27 loss to Michigan in the final game of the season ended that dream.
Utah finished their 2021 season with a 10-3 record, which put them in the top spot in the Pac 12 South. The Utes finished the season on a six-game winning streak, which included a 38-10 win over Oregon in the final game of the season.

Rose Bowl Odds
Ohio State vs. Utah
The money line odds have shifted a little bit in this game, but not by much. Opening odds had Utah at +210 and Ohio at -250. As the game approaches, the Utes are +200 and the Buckeyes stand at -240.
This game marks the 16th appearance of Ohio State in the Rose Bowl. Utah has not played in the Rose Bowl.
As far as momentum, Utah has much more than Ohio State. They ended their season on an extremely high note. Meanwhile, Ohio went from potential national champions to not competing in the playoffs in their final game. That could have an influence on the outcome of this game.

Another thing that could come into play in this matchup is the blueprint the Michigan Wolverines provided for the Utes to beat the Buckeyes. That blueprint? Be aggressive from the start of the game and set a pace and tempo that Ohio State can’t match. The most important part of that plan might be to use the offensive line to pound the defense of Ohio State and put them on their heels from the first snap of the game. The Utes then need to run the ball as much as they can and protect their quarterback, Cameron Rising, when he does drop back to pass.
The problem with that plan is that Ohio State is simply a better football team and I don’t think Utah has the personnel to make the plan work for them.
Rose Bowl Best Bets
Pick Ohio State to win. The Buckeyes might be coming off a crushing loss, but don’t expect them to not be fired up for this matchup. In fact, I would expect an inspired game from Ohio State. There is no way they want to have two losses in a row to close out the year.
Pick the under. Utah might not be able to beat Ohio State with the Michigan game plan, but that doesn’t mean they won’t try. WIth that, I expect the Utes to take a lot of time off the clock with their running game. That should keep the score from getting out of hand.
