Opening Heisman Trophy Futures Favor Bryce Young to Repeat in 2022

  • BetOnline favors Bryce Young (+325) to become only the second-ever two-time Heisman winner
  • CJ Stroud (+500) threw for 573 yards and six touchdowns in Ohio State’s 48-45 Rose Bowl victory over Utah
  • Caleb Williams (+1200) could reunite with Lincoln Riley at USC after entering the transfer portal

Bryce Young clinched the 2021 Heisman Trophy by throwing for 421 yards and three touchdowns in the SEC title game against Georgia. The true sophomore will try to replicate that success in Monday’s National Championship versus the Bulldogs and win Alabama its second-straight title and seventh in 13 years.

If Young comes up large on college football’s biggest stage, his odds to repeat as a Heisman winner in 2022 will only shorten from +325. Can Bryce Young repeat?

History is against Bryce Young (+325) as the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner is Ohio State’s Archie Griffin in 1974 and 1975. Other recent victors (Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston and Lamar Jackson) haven’t come all that close to repeating either. Then again, none of those guys played for a dominant Crimson Tide team that collects National Championships like nerds shopping for NFTs in the metaverse.

Three of the past 10 Heisman winners have attended Alabama (Young, Devonta Smith, Derrick Henry) and Nick Saban’s presence ensures the program will be as deep and talented as ever. Furthermore, eight of the past 10 award winners have been quarterbacks. And the only one whose team did not make the College Football Playoff since the format’s debut in 2013 was Jackson with Louisville in 2016.

Other Top Contenders

CJ Stroud (+500) went bananas in the Rose Bowl, throwing for 573 yards and six touchdowns in Ohio State’s 48-45 win over Utah. With sophomore Jaxon Smith-Njigba and freshman Marvin Harrison Jr. set to return after catching three scores each in that game, Stroud should only improve on a redshirt sophomore season that saw him toss 35 touchdowns and complete 71% of his passes.

Spencer Rattler (+700) seems severely overpriced considering he recently transferred to South Carolina after flaming out as Oklahoma’s starter. Avoid.

Rattler’s replacement Caleb Williams (+1200) is a much stronger bet after announcing he was also entering the NCAA transfer portal. After throwing for 1,912 yards and 21 touchdowns in the Sooners’ final eight games, the true freshman will likely land with a premier program like Georgia or reunite with Lincoln Riley at USC.

Another interesting name is Tyler Van Dyke (+1200), who threw for over 300 yards and at least three TDs in each of his last six games as a Miami Hurricanes rookie. Quinn Ewers (+2800) also ranked as a five-star quarterback and the No. 1 signal-caller in the 2022 class. The former Ohio State QB recently transferred to Texas to bolster Year 2 of Steve Sarkisian’s tenure.
