College Football Week 8 Best Bets: Michigan on the Rise

Fresh off of back-to-back road wins over Wisconsin and Nebraska, the Michigan Wolverines have vaulted to No. 6 on the AP Top 25 rankings, rekindling their hopes of claiming a berth in this season’s College Football Playoff. However, the Wolverines face another stiff test this weekend, when they play host to the conference rival Northwestern Wildcats as heavy favorites on the college football Week 8 betting lines. Later on Saturday, the stage is set for this week’s marquee matchup as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the visiting USC Trojans, also as betting favorites. The Irish currently rank a distant 13th on the AP Top 25, but can make substantial gains with a decisive victory over USC.

MyTopSportsbooks takes a look at the best bets on the college football odds as Week 8 action gets underway. Sports bettors getting in on college football betting action for the first time should refer to our NCAAF betting FAQ for tips on how to hone their football betting strategies.

Northwestern Wildcats vs (6) Michigan Wolverines -23.5

The Michigan Wolverines escaped with their narrowest victory during their 6-0 SU start to the season with a 32-29 win in Nebraska as 2.5-point favorites two weeks ago. And despite being idle last weekend, the Wolverines climbed two spots up the AP Top 25 rankings to their current position at No. 6. Now listed as an intriguing +2500 wager on the national championship odds, the Wolverines will be aiming to remain perfect and further enhance their chances of claiming a College Football Playoff berth when they host the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday afternoon as massive 23.5-point favorites at MyBookie.

Prior to last week’s victory, the Wolverines faced little resistance during their undefeated start. The squad surrendered fewer than 12 points per game over their first four outings, and continued to roll in a crushing 38-17 road win over the Wisconsin Badgers three weeks ago. In addition to joining the best in the nation with 38.5 points scored per game, the Michigan defense now ranks ninth after allowing just 15.5 points during their first six outings.

The Wolverines have also dominated Northwestern in recent head-to-head matchups, posting wins in 11 of 12 meetings since 2000, including each of the past six. But while Michigan has limited the Wildcats to fewer than 12 points per game over their past four meetings, just how well positioned are they to cover such a massive spread? While the Wolverines have dominated Northwestern on the scoreboard, they have consistently fallen short at the sportsbooks, covering the spread just three times in their past nine clashes, and going 1-3 ATS in their past four while pegged as double-digit chalk.

That’s good news for the Wildcats, who have struggled to generate offense during a middling 3-3 SU start in which they have failed to tally consecutive wins. Northwestern has been limited to just 28 total points in its past two outings, capped by last week’s 21-7 home win over Rutgers. The Wildcats have also lost three straight on the road including a pair of defeats as betting favorites, capped by a crushing 56-7 defeat in Nebraska three weeks ago.

The Pick: Michigan -23.5 (-110) at MyBookie

USC Trojans vs (13) Notre Dame Fighting Irish -7

Buoyed by a narrow 32-29 win over Virginia Tech as betting underdogs two weeks ago, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish renew their drive up the national rankings on Saturday night when they host the USC Trojans as 7-point favorites at Bovada. The Irish showed huge character in their recent victory over the Hokies, which came in the wake of their only defeat of the season, a 24-13 loss to the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats. However, it remains to be seen whether Notre Dame can produce a dominant enough win over USC to provide them with any further lift in the rankings, or their odds at BetOnline to reach the College Football Playoff, which currently sit at +2000.

The Trojans travel to South Bend looking to rebound from a crushing 42-26 home loss to Utah that dropped their SU record to 3-3. USC has struggled with consistency this season, alternating between wins and losses, both SU and ATS. However, they have posted decisive wins over Washington State and Colorado that extend their current SU win streak on the road to seven games. Unfortunately, that trend does not extend to recent visits to Notre Dame, where the Trojans have won straight. But decide dealing with a rash of injuries, look for USC to keep things close on Saturday night

The Pick: USC +7 (-115) at Bovada
