The Dayton Flyers want to keep surprising the basketball world when they take on the Stanford Cardinal, this Thursday in the March Madness opening game of the Sweet Sixteen stage, at 7:15 PM ET at the FedEx Forum, in Memphis, Tennessee.
Dayton is the 10th seed of the South Region, upsetting Ohio State and Syracuse to get here. The 55-53 victory over the Orange might be the best win in years for the Flyers.
“We have a good program with great tradition,” Dayton coach Archie Miller said Saturday night after Dayton reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in 30 years. “Now, we have the ability to build, and that’s what it’s all about.”
Stanford is the 11th seed in the region; they outplayed the Kansas Jayhawks to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. “To beat a team like this, a storied program with great coaching, great players, always feels amazing,” Cardinal Dwight Powell, who scored 15 points in the match said. “So as of right now we’re still in the race and we’re still playing in March, and it feels great.”
The Cardinal finished the game going 0-for-9 on 3-pointers; that didn’t matter. “We can make 3s but that’s not what we rely on,” coach Johnny Dawkins said. “I didn’t even notice it because that’s not what we’ve been.”
Stanford is a three point favorite over Dayton for this Sweet Sixteen matchup. The Cardinal are 9-19 ATS in their last 28 Thursday games, and the Flyers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following an ATS win.
