Navy Midshipmen vs. San Diego State Aztecs (-3, 54 o/u)
Two 7-5 teams will meet at the S.D. County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl as the Navy Midshipmen take on the San Diego Aztecs on Tuesday, December 23 (9:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN).
Navy closed the regular season with three wins in a row, including a 17-10 victory over Army. Navy’s best weapon is its ability to run the ball. The Midshipmen averaged 345.1 rushing yards per game, second best in the nation.
Unlike most teams, Navy played last weekend and had less time to prepare than San Diego State.
“We knew a long time ago that this was going to be a problem. We have a very short window to prepare, and our players are in the crux of finals,” Navy Coach Ken Niumatalolo said. “None of this is ideal, but San Diego State doesn’t care. There’s no point in complaining about it. We just have to adjust and make do the best we can.”
The San Diego Aztecs finished the season with two wins in a row. They will be playing their fifth bowl game in as many years, posting a 2-2 record so far.
“Very few teams are going to a fifth straight bowl game, and our players have worked hard to get here,” head coach Rocky Long said. “It shows how successful our program has become. I’ve been lucky enough to have gone to several bowls, and our fifth-year seniors have been to five straight bowls. The Poinsettia Bowl has been great to us, and we know how well they treat us. Our players are excited about being home, so their family and friends can come watch them play.”
San Diego State is a three-point favorite for the game and the over/under is 54 points. The last time these two teams met was in 2010 when the Aztecs posted a 35-14 win.
