The NY Rangers and Edmonton Oilers meet for the first time in the 2023-24 NHL season tonight at Rogers Place in Edmonton. New York brings a Metropolitan Division-leading 4-2 record into the matchup. Meanwhile, the Oilers are near the Pacific Division’s basement with a 1-4-1 record early this season. Here is some background on the NY Rangers vs. Edmonton Oilers game before we look at the betting odds, picks, and predictions for tonight’s matchup.

The NY Rangers finished the 2023 NHL regular season with a 47-22-13 record. The team’s 107 points earned them a berth in the Eastern Conference Playoffs, where they fell to the New Jersey Devils in seven games in the first round. Despite leading the team to back-to-back 100-point seasons, head coach Gerard Gallant and the Rangers parted ways after the 2023 NHL playoffs.  Peter Laviolette replaced him. The Rangers have played well early in the 2024 NHL season.

The Edmonton Oilers were the second-best team in the NHL’s Western Conference last season with a 50-23-9 record. They led the NHL in scoring with 325 goals. Despite their offensive power, the Vegas Golden Knights downed Edmonton 4-2 in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Oilers are struggling this season. The news that superstar forward Connor McDavid will be out for a couple of weeks with an upper-body injury won’t help the team.

New York Rangers betting breakdown

The NY Rangers no longer have trade deadline signings Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko on the ice, but the team doesn’t seem to miss them early in the 2024 NHL season. Despite losing those two big names, the team is in fine shape with Blake Wheeler, Nick Bonino, Tyler Pitlick, Alex Belzile, Erik Gustafsson, and Jonathan Quick joining the club along with new head coach Peter Laviolette. Wheeler was the big signing in the off-season. The veteran wing is coming off a season where he put up 55 points for the Winnipeg Jets while averaging 17:02 in ice time. He is struggling early this year with New York, with no points in six games and a significant decrease in ice time at 12:22 per game.

While Wheeler works through his issues, Artemi Panarin, Adam Fox, Chris Kreider, and Filip Chytil are averaging a point per game or better, with Panarin leading the team in points with eight. Kreider is the team’s leading goal scorer with five goals, including three power-play markers in the first six games of the current campaign.

Starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin has started five games for the Rangers this year. He has a 2.66 goals against average and a .897 save percentage.

The Rangers are coming off a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. The team has won two straight, also beating the Seattle Kraken on their Western Conference swing. The Rangers downed Seattle 4-1.

Edmonton Oilers betting breakdown

The Edmonton Oilers were expected to improve this season. Many pundits had the club picked to win the Pacific Division. That’s still a possibility, but with one win in their first six games of the 2024 NHL season, the Oilers are starting the year in a hole. One of the biggest issues facing the Oilers last season was scoring outside of their two superstars, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. The team will get a glimpse of life without McDavid over the next few games after he suffered an upper-body injury. In the one game he has missed, the Oilers lost 7-4 to the Minnesota Wild.

The Oilers goaltending has not been good this year. In six games the team has a save percentage of .856 and a goals against average of 4.50. Both goalies, Jack Campbell and Stuart Skinner, have a goals against average above 4.25, and it’s not as if the Oilers are letting their opponents launch a lot of shots on goal. The team has a shots against of 182 on the season, which is the 17th most in the NHL.

Edmonton doesn’t need to panic yet, but the team needs to play better, and it needs to do that in a hurry. They are on a three-game losing skid and their defense is playing poorly.
