The meeting of the Edmonton Oilers and the Vancouver Canucks in the second round of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs marks the third time these teams have met in the NHL Playoffs and the first since 1992. In 1992, the clubs went six games in the second round of the Western Conference Playoffs. Edmonton won that series. They also triumphed in 1986 when the Oilers won 3-0 in that best-of-five series. The teams have alternated wins and losses in their 2024 playoff series and are currently tied 2-2 heading into tonight’s Game 5 in Vancouver. Each game has been decided by one goal.
The Oilers secured their spot in the second round of the 2024 Playoffs by beating the Los Angeles Kings in five games. Edmonton finished the 2024 regular season with a 49-27-6 record. The club was second in the Pacific Division.

Edmonton Oilers betting breakdown
The head coach of the Edmonton Oilers, Kris Knoblauch made a move in goal in Game 4, giving Calvin Pickard the first playoff start of his NHL career after Stuart Skinner posted a .733 save percentage and a 5.97 goals against average in a losing effort in Game 4. Pickard rewarded his coach, and team with a win in Game 5. He allowed two goals on 21 shots for a .905 save percentage. In eight playoff games in 2024 Skinner has posted a .877 save percentage and a 3.23 goals against average. Knoblauch did not say if Pickard would start Game 5, but it would be a surprise if he isn’t in net tonight.
The Oilers are at their best when they are controlling the pace of the game, but the club struggles when the Canucks pick up their offense and play a more desperate form of hockey. For all their offensive talent, Edmonton must be better on defense. The Oilers have outshot the Canucks 124-82, but the team’s goal totals are both 14. The Oilers are five for 10 on the power play in this series.
Three players from the Oilers have three goals in this series: Evan Bouchard, Leon Draisaitl, and Mattias Ekholm. Draisaitl is the team leader in points with 10.
Vancouver Canucks betting breakdown
Vancouver Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet was not happy with his team’s effort in Game 4 of their playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers. “Some guys are playing pause hockey, and you can’t win if you have five or six passengers,” Tocchet said after the loss. “There’s at least a half-a-dozen passengers tonight.” Tocchet’s words could mean we see some roster changes for the Canucks in tonight’s Western Conference Game 5 matchup.
The Canucks only had 21 shots in Game 4. The problem with that number is it was actually an increase from Game 2 and 3, where they mustered 19 and 18 shots. Despite taking so few shots on goal, the Canucks have scored 14 goals. The team must be more aggressive on offense in Game 5.
The positive for the Canucks in this series has been backup goaltender Arturs Silovs. Silovs does not have stellar numbers in this series, posting a .887 save percentage and a 3.44 goals against average. However, he is keeping the team in the series. He needs offensive support from his teammates.
Vancouver’s power play has scored three goals on 12 power plays this series. As for team scoring, Brock Boeser and Elias Lindholm each have three goals in the series. Boeser is leading the team in points with six. Only two players have taken more than 10 shots against the Oilers, Conor Garland (11) and Nikita Zadorov (10). Edmonton has six players with 10 or more shots this series.
