Boca Juniors vs Fluminense: Copa Libertadores Betting Odds

While technically the hosts, Boca Juniors must travel across borders and play at Fluminense, a factor strongly considered in the betting odds. Fluminense are the favorites in the Copa Libertadores final, currently available at highly-rated online sportsbook MyBookie at a line of (+118). If the Argentine side Boca prevails, bettors will pay out a cool 3:1 or (+300). A draw is a relatively expected outcome at the current line of (+245),  a number which typically rarely dips below (+260).

In this case, after the regulation 90 minutes, along with any additional stoppage time, two 15-minute extra time periods will precede a potential penalty kick shootout. This is not a double-leg tie (home-and-home series). The winner of this match on Saturday will be crowned champion and hoist the Copa Libertadores trophy.

Boca Aims to be 7x Copa Libertadores Winners

Boca Juniors have won 6 Copa Libertadores trophies as one of the most celebrated clubs in South America. A win on Saturday would tie Boca with Independiente for the most ever. Xeneize also has a chance to put a stop to the recent Brazilian dominance of the mammoth South American trophy. No team outside the Brasileiro Serie A has won Copa Libertadores in four years, when Boca played fellow Argentinians River Plate.

Conversely, Fluminense are considered one of the greatest South American clubs to not hoist the trophy. The club has now garnered a reputation for failing to do so despite many record-breaking seasons, but have the opportunity to reverse the curse for just the second time ever. The club played its only other Copa Libertadores final in 2008, a penalty kick shootout loss to Liga de Quito.

The winners of this match will earn a grand total of $18 million in prize money, compared to $7 million for the runners-up. Additionally, the victors will be granted immediate entry into the FIFA Club World Cup semi-finals. Set to take place in Saudi Arabia on December 18, the South American side will play either Al Ahli, Al Ittihad, or Auckland City.

Head-to-Head Matchups and Recent Form

This will be the 7th-ever edition of the Boca Juniors vs Fluminense fixture, and the result will break an all-time tie amongst the clubs. Both sides have won two games, with the remaining two ending in a draw.

Both clubs have underperformed in their respective domestic leagues compared to their success in the regional Copa Libertadores as well. Boca Juniors find themselves 10th in Group B after only 3 wins in the first 11 games of the second phase of the Primera Division. The club has won just once in regulation time since September 19, a stretch of nine games.

Meanwhile, Fluminense are 8th in Serie A. If their standing were to hold, it would be their worst finish since 2019. Additionally, they have only won once in their last five games.

Boca will be without their captain Marcos Rojo in the deciding match after the defender was sent off in the second leg of the semi-final. Nicolas Valentini and Bruno Valdez are potential deputies for Rojo in his absence. The Argentinians will also be without Exequiel Zeballos after the youngster recently suffered an ACL injury.

Boca Juniors vs Fluminense Prediction and Free Betting Pick

It is difficult to predict just what we will see from each of these clubs, as they have looked very different in Copa Libertadores than in their domestic settings. Boca has relied on a stout defensive line and strong penalty kick shooting to get them to the final. However, they will be missing their captain and top defender Rojo, and will be playing in a hostile pro-Brazilian environment.

The goalkeepers will be x-factors in this match. Fluminense keeper Fabio began his career in 1997 alongside Ronaldinho, while Boca’s last line of defense Sergio Romero is the most capped goalkeeper in the history of the Argentina national team.

I am having trouble picking a side in this match as there are so many variables in play. Both clubs have seemed to prefer playing a bit dirty and have gone to penalty kicks many times in this tournament already. Therefore, I think a draw in regulation time is a great angle to play.

Whether 0-0, 1-1, or 2-2, I don’t think either side will be able to significantly separate themselves from their opponents. And at (+245), I think we are getting great value as some books are already as low as (+205). Take the draw in this matchup, one that could very easily be settled in yet another thrilling penalty kick shootout involving two of the most legendary South American goalkeepers.
