The 2023 Liga MX Apertura 2023 season began in late June. With the 2023 Leagues Cup now behind us, the 18 clubs participating in the Liga BBVA MX season are back in the hunt for the Apertura championship. Last year, Pachuca defeated Toluca 8–2 on aggregate to win their seventh league title. The last team to repeat as Apertura champions in Liga MX was Tigres UANL, who won three straight years between 2015 and 2017.
Liga MX is the top soccer league in Mexico. The league features 18 teams and has done so since 2020-21. Liga MX is a bit different from other sports leagues because it has two seasons, Apertura and Clausura. Each of those seasons comes with its own playoff stage, producing potentially two different champions each year.
At the end of the 17-game regular Apertura season, the top six teams qualify for the quarter finals, while the next four teams compete in a play-in round. The top two teams from the play-in round join the other clubs in the quarter finals, and play down until a champion is crowned.

CF Monterrey betting breakdown
CF Monterrey finished the 2023 Clausura regular season with an outstanding 13-1-3 record. However, that did not translate to playoff success for the team, as they were bounced out of the postseason in the semifinal round by UANL with a 2-1 aggregate score. That finish cost Head coach Victor Manuel Vucetich his job. In his place, the team picked up Fernando Ortiz, who coached Club America to second place in the Clausura regular season with a 9-7-1 record.
A lack of talent was not the issue for Monterrey last season, as they were the only team in the league with a goal difference above 20. The club hopes a change in leadership will give the team its first Apertura title since 2019.
Club America betting breakdown
Like CF Monterrey, Club America enter the 2023-24 Liga MX season with a new manager in Andre Jardine. The Brazilian coach won the 2020 Summer Olympics with Brazil’s under-23 squad but moved to Liga MX in 2022 to work with Atletico San Luis. He joined Club America in June 2023. The team has plenty of talent in Liga MX’s 2022-23 MVP Henry Martin and Mexican national team fullback Kevin Alvarez.
While Club America has had a slow start to the 2023-24 Liga MX season, it has to be noted that the club was without four players during the Gold Cup, which was more than any other team in the league.
Chivas Guadalajara
Chivas Guadalajara wrapped up the 2023 Clausura regular season with a record of 10-4-3. The team then went to the Final round of the playoffs, where they fell to UANL by a score of 3-2. With that experience behind him, head coach Veljko Paunovic, who is now in his second season with the club, should be able to make the minor tweaks necessary to improve his club. Will that be enough to put the team over the top? It’s hard to say, but the addition of Erick Gutierrez will be of some help to Paunovic and his team for the 2023-24 Liga MX season.
