West Ham Team News and Recent Games

West Ham succumbed to what may be Manchester United’s strongest performance of the season in a 3-0 loss at Old Trafford last week. The Hammers were simply overwhelmed by wave after wave of dangerous opportunities for the Red Devils. Rasmus Hojlund scored in celebration of his 21st birthday, and Alejandro Garnacho netted a brace in the win. The two had been heavily criticized by pundits and supporters alike for a lack of production, but the youthful duo have come in handy as of late.

West Ham was lambasted by French club Olympique Lyonnais, commonly known as Lyon, for a “profound lack of respect” due to “incomprehensible behavior” during negotiations for the transfer of Said Benrahma. The Algeria international was to be sent to the French side on a paid loan of $6.4 million at the end of June with an option to buy, but issues with paperwork caused the deal to remain uncompleted at the end of the transfer window. Lyon successfully appealed to FIFA, who ratified the deal upon review.

Additionally, the confirmation of Pablo Fornals’ transfer from West Ham to Real Betis took place on Friday, following some initial delays attributed to technical issues. West Ham officially announced Fornals’ transfer on the same day, following efforts by Betis CEO Ramon Alarcon to address a “computer error” issue that occurred on the English club’s end. The Spanish midfielder completed a permanent move to the LaLiga side, concluding his four-and-a-half year tenure at West Ham.

Arsenal Recent Form and Injury Updates

Despite a 3-1 victory over table-topping Liverpool, Arsenal found themselves blasted by the media for their conduct upon the match’s conclusion. Television cameras captured Arsenal captain Ødegaard snapping pictures of club photographer Stuart MacFarlane after the final whistle at the Emirates. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher expressed the opinion that the players ought to have headed straight to the tunnel after the victory, and co-pundit Gary Neville suggested that such actions demonstrate the team’s “immaturity.”

Manager Mikel Arteta has also been in the limelight for his particularly egregious goal celebrations, along with his propensity to command his team just inches from the touchline during play. However, all these complaints become forgotten lore if Arsenal are to engineer a league-winning second half of the season. The Gunners are just two points behind Liverpool, who are both tied with the fewest goals allowed at 22. A win in a London derby against West Ham will be a strong step forward, but it won’t come easy. The Hammers have fallen only twice at London Stadium this season, to Manchester City and Everton.

West Ham vs Arsenal Prediction and Free Betting Pick

West Ham and Arsenal both come into this contest with a full week’s rest, after playing last Sunday as well. With relatively fresh legs and lineups that have efficiently avoided an accumulation of injuries so far, I have no reason to believe both clubs will not be in tip-top shape come the weekend. Big underdogs at home tend to lead to higher-scoring matches, as any home club will produce goals at a higher rate than away. Yet the prospect of defending a much-superior club at the same time often results in concessions that bring totals above their expected number.

Therefore, I am looking to play the over in this match. A line of 2.5 is available at (-150) at BetUS and Bovada, a number that I believe is a touch too kind. Arsenal’s last four matches have gone over 2.5 goals. While West Ham’s defense has looked stronger as of late, I have a hard time believing they can shut down a streaking Arsenal whose strikers look to be in prime form. The Gunners will be pushing hard for a win, which may lead the game to open up in the second half. I would play this at just a half unit given the juice we have to lay, but I like this scoreline to read at least 3 goals by the time the head referee blows the final whistle.
