  • What: 2024 T20 World Cup Match 17
  • Who: Australia vs. England
  • Where: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados
  • When: Saturday, June 8th, 2024
  • Time: 1 p.m ET

Old rivals to resume hostilities

Australia vs. England in cricket is one of the oldest and most competitive sports rivalries. The two nations have fought many battles over the years, the most recent being the 2023 Ashes series in England, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

England will feel they owe the Aussies. The fourth Test match of that series was washed out and ended in a draw with England on top. The draw cost England the series win and meant the Aussies retained the Ashes Urn.

The T20 World Cup is a different format. But many of the same players are involved, and there will again be no quarter given. Australia won this trophy in 2021, and England won it on Aussie soil in 2022.

When England won it in 2022, they became the first nation to ever hold both white ball world cups simultaneously. If Australia can add this year’s T20 World Cup to the ICC 50 Over World Cup they won last year, they will become the second.

They won’t want to miss the chance. So the Aussies will have the bit between their teeth, making them a great bet to win the trophy outright.

Australia vs. England Match Betting

After opening their T20 World Cup campaign with a convincing win over Oman, Australia is the favorite to win on the money line at -138. To upset the odds, England is +110 with the oddsmakers.

The same fixture in the 2022 T20 World Cup would have seen England as the betting favorite, highlighting the changing fortunes of both teams over the past couple of years.

2024 T20 World Cup Outright Winner Betting

In the latest betting to win the 2024 T20 World Cup, India are the favorites. A word of caution, though. We saw this throughout the whole of the 2023 ICC 50-Over World Cup, and when it came to the final, India badly fluffed their lines.

Anyway, the best cricket betting sites make India the favorite at +230.

Second in the betting to win the competition is Australia at +350. The Aussies showed India how it is done in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, defeating the hosts in a World Cup set up for them to win.

As for England, the defending champions, they are +500 third-betting favorites. It would be foolish to completely write them off, but they look like a shadow of the team that lifted the trophy in Australia in 2022.

Back in 2022, everybody knew England were the strongest outfit. This time around, they are anything but.

Latest Form

Both nations are expected to qualify from Group B. The top two nations go through, and with Scotland, Namibia, and Oman as the other three teams in the group, it’s hard to see the Aussies and England not qualifying.

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for Jos Buttler and his England team already. On Tuesday their opening group match against Scotland was washed out by rain as a draw. The result means England are under immediate pressure.

England can’t afford to make any stupid slip-ups against Namibia and Oman. And they will also be sweating on the weather, as there has been a lot of rain in the region recently. Another match washed out against one of the so-called minnow nations could see England dumped out early should they lose to Australia on Saturday.

The Aussies had no such issues in their opening group match. Mitchell Marsh’s team took care of Oman with relative ease, beating the minnows by 39 runs in their opening match on Wednesday.

It was little more than a routine run out for the 2021 competition winners, meaning they come into the match against England without any of the added pressure that Jos Buttler and his team already find themselves under.

Australia vs. England Betting Picks and Predictions

In the T20 format of cricket, all teams can beat each other on any given day. England are the defending T20 world champions. But they look a mile away from the team that won the competition in Australia in 2022.

There is no Alex Hales, no Ben Stokes, and the team looks more like one in transition. Australia still has the pace trio of Cummins, Starc, and Hazlewood. They can strangle the opposition and be almost impossible to score off at times.

If Jos Buttler performs for England, he can lead the team to victory. But England looks like a team that peaked two years ago, while the Aussies look in the zone now. England needs the win after their no result against Scotland. But we can only see them coming up short.

A win for Australia is our betting pick.
