Australia Favored for a home T20 Series win over West Indies

Australia hosts West Indies in a best-of-three T20 series starting in Hobart on Friday. The hosts are favorites to win the series. But the West Indies will fancy their chances in the shorter format. So can the West Indies upset their hosts and head home with some glory? We take a closer look at their chances in our latest cricket betting picks.

  • What; Australia vs West Indies – T20 Series (Best of three)
  • Where; Hobart, Adelaide, Perth in Australia
  • When; February 9th-13th, 2024

This is the final leg of the West Indies tour of Australia. So far it has been mixed for the visitors. In the Test series, they were well beaten in the 1st Test by ten wickets. But in the 2nd Test, the Windies pulled off a remarkable 8-run win to draw the series and leave former Aussie players foaming at the mouth in disgust at the result.

Normal service resumed in the recent ODI series, with Australia sweeping the series 3-0.

Now the two teams are about to start a three-match T20 series, with the Aussies looking for another sweep. But the Windies will sense the chance of another upset in their preferred format.

Australia vs. West Indies: T20 Series Betting

Alongside the United States of America, the West Indies are jointly hosting the 2024 T20 World Cup in just a few months. This three-match series is part of their build-up to the competition, where they will be looking to win the trophy for a record third time.

In recent years, the T20 format is what the West Indies have been the most competitive in. But at the 2022 World Cup, they went out at the first hurdle. They will be desperate to get back to the glory days of 2012 and 2016. And beating Australia in their own backyard would show they are back on track and in with a chance of winning the World Cup again later this year.

The best cricket betting sites don’t see that happening, though. In the opening Day/Night match in Hobart on Friday, they make Australia the favorite to win at -278, with the West Indies at +193.

While in the series outright winner betting, the best cricket sites make Australia -500, with the West Indies at +333.

Moving on, and in the series correct score betting, Australia is +120 to sweep the series 3-0 and +150 to win the series 2-1. West Indies are +2500 to win 3-0 and +400 to win the series 2-1.

Australia looking at backup Bowling options ahead of the 2024 World Cup

Australia will be captained in the three-match series by their Allan Border-medal-winner Mitch Marsh. All-rounder Marsh is covering for regular captain Pat Cummins, who, along with Steven Smith, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc, are four all-format players the hosts have decided to rest for his series.

This gives the Aussies plenty of questions to answer ahead of the series.

First, David Warner will return to open the batting, but who partners him is unknown, with Smith and Head not playing.

Also posing problems for Australia is an inexperienced bowling unit. With Cummins and Starc rested, the hosts drafted in Nathan Ellis and the rapidly quick Spencer Johnson to supplement the regular Sean Abbot and Josh Hazlewood.

These bowling replacements are good quality. But they are not as good as Cummins and Starc. They also have the added pressure of effectively being on trial to see if they are good enough for a possible place in the Australian World Cup squad later in the year.

Don’t underestimate the West Indies in T20 format

This is a settled West Indies T20 squad captained by the experienced Rovman Powell. Powell will have the rare luxury of being able to call on the talents of Jason Holder, Kyle Mayers, Sherfane Rutherford, Brandon King, Andre Russell, and Nicholas Pooran.

This squad is the bulk of the same players who have just beaten India and England 3-2 in respective recent series.

It could be argued that neither India nor England played their strongest sides. But both nations had enough of their top stars and first-choice understudies on show to have won, and both came up short against this West Indies team.

Our Pick

In the series betting, under no circumstances could we recommend backing an Australia team missing Pat Cummins, Steven Smith, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc to win a series at odds of -500. It’s a risky bet with the quartet, never mind without them.

Instead, we’re looking at the correct score market. We’re not sure the West Indies will win the first match. But we can see them winning at least one of the three fixtures. The odds of a 3-0 or 2-1 series win for Australia have little difference. So we feel it makes more sense to go for Australia to win the series 2-1 at the better odds.

Our cricket betting pick is for Australia to beat the West Indies 2-1 at odds of +150.
