Australia on a charge

Australia has often been labeled as flat track bullies in cricket, but in general, that’s a recipe for success on pitches prepared at ICC cricket events. So far in this World Cup, they have lived up to that reputation, defeating Pakistan and the Netherlands with ease. Although, their win over Sri Lanka was far from convincing.

A word of caution about the Aussies. They may well have won three matches in succession. But they were matches that the five-time World Cup winners were expected to win. When they faced testing opposition at the start of the competition, they were well beaten by both India and South Africa.

A win over New Zealand will show they can beat the teams required to win the World Cup. But if they lose, suddenly, they will be under pressure again.

Tougher tests to come for the Black Caps

New Zealand started with a win over England in their opening match. They followed that win with crushing victories over the Netherlands, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

They latter three were routine wins. But New Zealand made them look remarkably easy. Remember, the Netherlands has beaten South Africa, and Afghanistan has beaten England and Pakistan. The so-called minnows can be dangerous. But New Zealand have swept them aside.

There are tougher assignments to come for the Black Caps, starting with Australia. And after that, they will still have South Africa, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka left to face. So a win over their local rivals won’t go amiss on Saturday.

Our Picks

New Zealand is one of those plucky sides that should never be written off. But when the Aussies have their tails up, they are one of the worst sides in the world to be facing. At the moment, the Aussie tails are well and truly up. They have just set a new world record with their 309-run win over the Netherlands, the biggest winning margin ever recorded at a World Cup.

New Zealand have it in them to beat Australia. But on current form, we make the Aussies our betting pick to win.

For a bonus pick, David Warner is in red-hot form, with two centuries in his last two matches. We may not get another ton. But we feel Warner is worth backing to be the top Australian batter at +300.
