A sweep for India over Australia looks the best bet in 3rd and final ODI

India and Australia meet in the third and final ODI of their three-match series in Rajkot on Wednesday. India are looking for a third win to sweep the series. While after two chastening defeats, the Aussies will be looking to sign off with a consolation win. In our latest cricket betting picks, we tell you the best bets to make on the match.

  • What; 3rd ODI (India leads best of three series 2-0)
  • Who; India vs. Australia
  • Where; Khandheri Cricket Stadium, Rajkot, India
  • When; Wednesday, September, 27th 2023

This is the final 50-over match of the series between these two teams, and also one of the last matches in this format that both sides will play before the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup.

India and the Aussies have a couple of warm-up matches scheduled before the main event starts on October 5th. But as far as competitive fixtures go, this is the final match the two nations will play that has ODI ranking points at stake ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Despite the fact there are ranking points at stake, both nations have used this series to experiment and give backup players a runout. Australia more so than the hosts. And what this series has so far exposed is that the Aussie backup bowlers look way off the pace.

India makes light work of Australia

In the opening match, India won the toss and asked Australia to bat first. The Aussies managed 276 all out from their 50 Overs, with David Warner top-scoring with 52. In response, the Indians chased down the total with eight balls to spare, eventually winning the match by five wickets (281/5).

This was a special victory for India as it meant they took over the top spot in the ODI rankings, and in doing so, they now occupy the top position in the world rankings for all three formats in the men’s game. Only South Africa in 2012 has managed to achieve this feat before.

In the second match, the win for India was far more comprehensive. After being asked to bat first by the Australians, India amassed 399/5 from their 50 Overs. Shubman Gill (104) and Shreyas Iyer (105) scored centuries as India took the Australian bowlers to the cleaners.

In the end, rain intervened. But that wasn’t enough to save the Aussies, who were bowled out for 217, chasing a revised target of 317. They eventually lost by 99 runs via the DLS method.

Latest betting to win the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup

So, has this affected the latest 2023 Cricket World Cup betting odds? Well, it hasn’t changed the odds of an Indian World Cup win. But there has been a slight drift on the Australians.

India was the +225 favorite before this series, and they are still the favorites to win the World Cup at +225. England is second in the betting at +300, with the Aussies at +450. Some sportsbooks still have the Aussies at +400. But some have eased them out to +450.

This could be down to uncertainty about the fitness of their three-pronged pace attack of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc rather than the results in India. If those three are fit and firing, Australia is a match for anybody. Lose them, and as we’ve just seen, the backup players are nowhere near as potent.

India vs. Australia 3rd ODI Match Betting

Moving onto the third match between India and Australia, the best cricket betting sites seem to be expecting more of the same. India are the favorites to win at -140, with Australia at +120. Okay, these are not one-sided odds in favor of India. But that could be down to the potential for Australia to field their strongest possible XI for the final match of the series.

Our Picks

This series is starting to become a real problem for Australia. Their batters haven’t quite got to grips with Indian conditions, and their bowlers have fallen short. It must be starting to drain confidence, and it’s hard to see that changing in the final match.

Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur are set to be rested for the match. But that won’t help the Aussies as skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and quick bowler Jasprit Bumrah are expected to return for the third ODI. If anything, this makes India stronger.

Australia hopes to have Mitchell Starc back to play. And after being rested for the 2nd match, they should have Pat Cummins back in the team. The chances are that Josh Hazelwood may sit the fixture out if Starc and Cummins return as the Australians try and wrap the trio in cotton wool, prefering to have them fresh for when the real action starts in October.

All the uncertainty over selection and resting players makes Australia unbackable for us. We make India our betting pick to win the 3rd ODI and sweep the series against Australia.
