There are two different PGA events happening this weekend — the Valspar Championship and the Hoag Classic (technically this is a PGA Tours Champions event). The top modern-day players are in Tampa Bay for the Valspar tourney, of course, and that’s where our betting attention is on. The event begins on Thursday, March 16 and you’ll want to read this before you put any money down at the top-used golf betting sites. We’re offering the very best betting picks on the 2023 Valspar Championship winner so stay with us!
2023 Valspar Championship Betting Preview
The Players Championship had a major-like feel a weekend ago given its star-studded playing field. Admittedly, that’s not the case for Valspar, which doesn’t have designated status this year. However, the drop-off in field strength isn’t catastrophic either and that’s where we wanted to begin our 2023 Valspar Championship preview.
The biggest names in the field include Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Matt Fitzpatrick, and defending champion Sam Burns. To no one’s surprise, it’s these very players that are most favored to win the Valspar Championship. Here’s a look at the current betting odds at top bookmakers:
Golfer | ![]() | ![]() | |
Justin Thomas | +1200 | +1200 | +1200 |
Jordan Spieth | +1200 | +1200 | +1200 |
Matt Fitzpatrick | +1400 | +1400 | +1400 |
Sam Burns | +1800 | +1800 | +1800 |
Justin Rose | +2000 | +2000 | +2000 |
Tommy Fleetwood | +2200 | +2200 | +2200 |
Keegan Bradley | +2200 | +2200 | +2200 |
Adam Hadwin | +2500 | +2500 | +2500 |
As we said, Burns is the reigning Valsparo winner, but not just one year, he’s actually won back-to-back times. This comes after Paul Casey also won two in a row between 2018 and 2019 (the 2020 event was canceled before Burns two-peat). There’s not many golf tournaments where players win consecutive years, little less five years of that feat so that’s something to look out for here. In the event’s 20-year history, two other players — K.J. Choi and Retief Goosen — also won multiple times (albiet not consecutively).
Per usual, the event is being played at the Copperhead Course in West Florida. The Course has played hosts since the event began in 2000. The par-71 has a distance of over 7,300 yards, and the Valspar winner is typically only single digits under par so it’s far from an easy location to play at.
Best Bets To Win 2023 Valspar Championship
Look, with golf events and their 100-plus-player fields, you can split hairs choosing who to bet on. We mean, you can make a case for dozens upon dozens playing. However, our job is to pick the MOST worth trusting with your money — and that means multiple players, not just one. After scouring the field, we’ve settled on the following three players:
Justin Thomas
Look, we get it, Thomas had an awful — and we mean awful — outing at the Players Championship a week ago. He finished all the way in T-60. Besides a fourth-place outing in Phoenix, Thomas has had a 2023 season to forget. But dammit, if there’s a tourney where he could possibly turn things around, then it’s the Valspar. Thomas has top 20s in four out of five appearances at the event, includes a T-3 last year where he just barely missed a playoff. We’re sticking our neck out and saying Thomas gets back on the winning track this week.
Keegan Bradley
A big start out of the gate would be par for the course for Bradley here. That’s because Bradley has been T-6 or better after day one in five out of his last six starts here. Can he finish strong is the question, which we’re betting that, yes, he can. Bradley finished runner-up once (2021) so he’s more than capable of hanging around. With a less-cluttered playing field, he could go the distance and win.
David Lingmerth
Alright, we needed one longshot bet and no one fits that bill better than Lingmerth, coming off a head-turning performance at the Players. Lingmerth, ranked 127 in the world, finished the Players at eight under, good enough for a T6 finish. What’s the saying, “ride the hot hand”? Yeah, Lingmerth is that and then some!
