2023 NASCAR Season Recap (So Far)

We can’t look toward the future without being aware of the past and seeing what we’ve learned. So what’s the main takeaway after six races? Welp, to us, the 2023 NASCAR season in a nutshell is that the sport has returned to the norm in terms of competitive balance.

In 2022, when the Next Gen car was brand-spanking new, there were lots and lots of surprises. The year was riddled with first-time winners. That’s less of a thing in 2023. Besides Ricky Stenhouse Jr. winning the Daytona 500, the other four race winners have been the usual suspects β€” Byron (two wins), Kyle Busch, Logano, and Reddick.

If you look at the Cup Series standings, there are no real surprises here either. As it stands, Chastain leads the pack with 211 points. Busch (192), Logano (186), Harvick (186), and Bell (184) round out the top-5.

Moreover, the other big story has been Chase Elliott. Before the season started, he was one of the favorites to take the Cup Series. That was dashed when Elliott injured himself in a snowboarding accident. He fractured his left tibia, requiring surgery that still has him out of action. Originally, Elliott was expected to miss six weeks, which would put his return around late April. Nothing is set in stone, though, so it may be even longer.

Point is, if you’re one of the many bettors that had a futures ticket on Elliott on winning the Cup Series for a seconds time, you’re on life support right now. But fear not, there’s still money to be made elsewhere. We have a few picks below to get you on the rebound trail.

Best Bets To Win 2023 NASCAR Cup Series

We’re going to be dropping two different bets on the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series winner. You just have to this early in the season when a lot can unfold. We mean, look at what happened with Elliott. Imagine if you had a futures bet on him and only him. Don’t take that risk and bet on a few different drivers here. These next two are atop our to-bet list:

Kyle Busch

2023 has been the year of change for Busch. Of course, he departed Joe Gibbs Racing after a 15-year run that included 56 wins and a pair of Cup Series championships. Many expected the move to happen in 2024, not 2023 as Busch reunited with Chevy over at Richard Childress Racing.

So far, so good for Busch. The 37-year-old driver looks revitalized after six races. A few weeks ago, he notched his first win of the RCR era at the Auto Club Speedway. He’s now up to 61 career wins, which is the most among all active drivers. Busch also finished runner-up at last weekend’s COTA road race so the momentum is still high. All this makes us confident to back Busch with a bet the rest of the way.

Ross Chastain

How the hell is Chastain’s betting line here only +1200? There are seven drivers with better odds, but how? As mentioned earlier, Chastain is leading the standings right now with a 20-point cushion. Moreover, he finished second overall a year ago. To us, Chastain is way too underpriced, which demands a bet. Bookies rarely misprice things so when they do, you got to make β€˜em pay for it!

How To Watch NASCAR This Season?

As we said earlier, we’re barely one-sixth of the way through the 2023 NASCAR season. That means you have ample betting opportunities the rest of the way. Still, those opportunities mean nothing if you’re not actually following the sport regularly. To follow along, you just have to watch NASCAR on Sundays. Races air live on FOX and NBC (the networks split coverage with NBC getting late-season races).

We’re going to mark a few dates you absolutely can’t miss if you’re serious about this NASCAR betting thing. Here are a few of the big races left in 2023:

  • May 28 – Coca-Cola 600
  • August 13 β€” Brickyard
  • September 3 β€” Southern 500 (Round of 16 playoff opener)
  • November 5 β€” Championship 4
