Feyenoord to Double Up in Eredivisie 2023/24

The Eredivisie season offers a fascinating three-way battle between some of Europe’s biggest clubs, but Feyenoord could be on course to win consecutive top-flight trophies.

Who do Bettors Favor?

Checking out the best-rated online sportsbooks we can see that bettors make Ajax the favorite to win the Eredivisie title this season, though not by a wide margin. Ajax is rated as a +125 chance, with Feyenoord priced around +225 and PSV Eindhoven at +250. Outside the big three, AZ Alkmaar is the main challenger, at odds of +2500, ahead of FC Twente.

MTS Eredivisie Betting Briefing

The top league in Netherlands football has often punched above its weight in Europe and the top three in the betting for this season have all won the biggest prize of them all: the Champions League, or its predecessor, the European Cup, along with the Europa League/UEFA Cup.

That success has been recognized by UEFA, which has given the Eredivisie an extra European qualification spot. The team that finishes second this year will go into the Champions League Group Stage, rather than the qualifiers, while the third-place team will get a shot at the qualifying round.

When you’re betting on the Eredivisie, Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord are the main contenders and between them, these teams have won all but two editions of the Eredivisie held since 2000, with those exceptions being AZ Alkmaar and FC Twente, in 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Going into last season, Ajax had won three consecutive Eredivisie titles, but it finished in third place, a full 13 points behind leaders Feyenoord and six points behind PSV, which finished as runner-up.

MTS Eredivisie Favorites

Ajax starts the season as favorite, but the closeness of the betting indicates that bettors are not entirely confident that the 36-time champion can bounce back from last season’s disappointment.

Maurice Steijn is the new man at the helm, but he has a tough task in rebuilding after last year, and his efforts will not be helped by the departure of key players Dusan Tadic and Jurrien Timber. The club is used to regular rebuilds after losing its best players, but this time there is a much stronger challenge from Ajax’s main rivals and Steijn will be under intense pressure from the start, particularly after a less-than-impressive run of pre-season friendlies.

PSV had a good season, finishing second in Eredivisie and winning the KNVB Cup, but it also has a new manager as Peter Bosz takes over and he has the tough task of replacing key player Xavi Simons. Bosz is a highly-rated coach, but his style has failed at times in the past, most notably in Dortmund and there is likely to be a long learning curve for his players.

These doubts hanging over the main contenders for the title mean that Feyenoord is in a good position to retain its Eredivisie championship, something it hasn’t done since 1962.

Manager Arne Slot has earned a good reputation as one of Europe’s top managers and the club has been busy in the transfer market this summer, refreshing a squad that was already the strongest in the division. De Kuip is always a tough ground to visit, which gives Feyenoord an edge over most opponents in this league and it looks a solid pick in the Eredivisie winners market.

MTS Eredivisie Top Three Betting

It would be expecting too much of any of the other teams in Eredivisie to beat the Big Three to the title, but there are some strong candidates to sneak into the top three, and the fact that third place is now a ticket to the Champions League should increase competition.

AZ Alkmar has finished third, fifth and fourth under Pascal Jansen, and reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League last season, and that degree of consistency, combined with some astute young signings this summer makes the team a significant threat to any of the top three teams whose standards drop over the next nine months.

FC Twente looks like the team that is best placed to challenge AZ as the ‘best of the rest’ and has a new manager in Joseph Oosting. One of his key tasks will be to get the best out of Manfred Ugalde, the Costa Rican striker who was extremely effective in the latter part of last season and who has since been signed to a permanent deal at the club.

Still, there is more doubt around Twente’s ability to replicate last season’s form, and the losses of Vaclav Cerny and Ramiz Zerrouki will be hard to compensate for, so AZ remains the best option for those interested in the Top Three betting markets.
