- What: 2023 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship
- Date: April 22, 2023 – April 29, 2023,
- Location: Gangneung Curling and Hockey Centre in Gangneung, South Korea
The pandemic caused the cancellation of the 2020 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championships. Since then, the team from Scotland has dominated the World Mixed Doubles competition. They won in 2021 as the host country and followed that with another title in 2022 with a victory in Switzerland. The 2023 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship takes place in Gangneung, South Korea for the first time.
The World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship was first held in 2008. Since that inaugural tournament, five teams have picked up gold medals: Switzerland (7), Russia (2), Hungary (2), Scotland (2) and Sweden (1). Overall 16 teams have medaled at least once.
Switzerland was the dominant force in mixed curling from 2008 through 2018, winning back-to-back titles on three occasions and never going more than two years between championships. However, the team from Switzerland has not won a mixed doubles title since 2018. Last year, the team finished in second place.

Scotland
Scotland’s record over the past two World Mixed Doubles Curling championships is 22-1. In 2022, the team of Eve Muirhead and Bobby Lammie took home the gold medal. In 2021, Scotland was represented by Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat. The competition to decide who will represent Scotland at the 2023 world mixed doubles curling championship takes place in mid-March. Whoever gets the nod, will most likely emerge as the favorite to take gold in 2023.
Switzerland
Switzerland’s record over the past two mixed doubles world championships is 13-8. The duo of Martin Rios and Jenny Perret went 5-5 in 2021 and failed to medal. In 2022, Sven Michel and Alina Pätz had an 8-3 run that saw them take home the country’s eighth overall medal and first silver.
It’s hard to believe that Switzerland is satisfied with its absence atop the medal podium in the mixed doubles curling championship. Look for them to be in the mix in 2023.
Sweden
Sweden might only have a bronze medal in the past two years, but the team has a 17-4 record over the past two years in the mixed doubles world championships. In 2021 the team of Oskar Eriksson and Almida De Val went 10-1 in finishing third. Last year the duo of Rasmus Wrana and Isabella Wrana had a 7-3 run before bowing out in the quarterfinals to Germany, who finished with the bronze medal.
Sweden has a 2019 gold medal to go along with four silvers and two bronzes.
Our pick
No team has won the world mixed doubles curling championship three years in a row. Switzerland went back-to-back three times before Scotland accomplished that feat in 2021 and 2022. With that, I think the best bet for the 2023 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship is to pick against Sweden winning the title a third straight time. My pick is Switzerland to get back to gold for the first time since 2018.
