Michael van Gerwen
Michael van Gerwen has something to prove. He was the third seed in the 2022 PDC World Championship behind Gerwyn Price and Peter Wright, but he was forced to withdraw from the tournament after a positive COVID-19 test before the third round.
Van Gerwen is currently the No. 3 ranked player in the world. He is in second place on the PDC ProTour Order of Merit (rolling 12 months) with £135,250 and third on the PDC Order of Merit (past two years) at £900,750.
Van Gerwen has won three PDC ranking events in 2022: World Matchplay, World Grand Prix, and Players Championship Finals. He also has one non-ranking win, capturing the Premier League Darts title.
The 33-year-old is a three-time World Champion, winning that title in 2014, 2017 and 2019.
Gerwyn Price
The 37-year-old Gerwyn Price enters this year’s event as the No. 1 seeded player. He has one previous victory at the World Championship. That win came in 2021. In 2022, Price was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Price is the No. 1 ranked player in the world. He is in the No. 11 position in the PDC ProTour Order of Merit with £89,250, but he is in the top spot in the PDC Order of Merit at £1,176,750.
Price made one PDC ranking tournament final at the World Matchplay event, but he finished as runner-up to Van Gerwen in that event. He has one 2022 non-ranking event win, capturing first place at the World Series of Darts Finals.
Peter Wright
With previous wins in 2020 and 2022, the 52-year-old Peter Wright looks to win his third World Championship in London in 2023.
Wright is the No. 5 player in the PDC ProTour Order of Merit with £115,250. As for the PDC Order of Merit, Wright is No. 2 there with winnings of £1,144,500.
Following his win at the 2022 PDC World Championship, Wright did not have the best year of his career. His best tournament finish came at the World Grand Prix, where he made it to the semi-final round, where eventual winner Van Gerwen eliminated him.
Michael Smith
Michael Smith has one ranking tournament win in 2022. He captured the Grand Slam of Darts championship. Besides that, Smith has finished as the runner-up at the UK Open and European Championship. He lost to Danny Noppert at the UK Open and fell to Ross Smith in the European Championship.
The 32-year-old Smith has never won a World Championship, but he has finished in second place in 2019 and 2022.
Smith is the No. 9 player in the PDC ProTour Order of Merit with winnings of £106,750. He is No. 4 in the PDC Order of Merit at £758,500.
