Neil Robertson
The 2010 World Champion, Neil Robertson, made his 2022-23 season debut at the Hong Kong Masters. The 40-year-old recently said he will not play every tournament like he once did. “’I’m playing for fun now. I’ve got a young family now, so I don’t need to play in every tournament these days. My family is really important to me. They’re my inspiration to win.”
Robertson had three ranking tournament wins last year, including the Tour Championship, which he also won in 2021. He made it past Mark Williams in the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Masters, but fell to Ronnie O’Sullivan by a score of 6-4 in the semi-final round.
Robertson made it to the last 32 in the 2021 Northern Ireland Open. Ricky Walkden, who made the finals, eliminated him in that round.
Despite his relaxed schedule, Robertson is the No. 3 ranked player in the world.
Ronnie O’Sullivan
The No. 1 ranked snooker player in the world, Ronnie O’Sullivan, picked up his first win of the 2022-23 snooker season with a victory in the Hong Kong Masters.
The 46-year-old finished 2022 by winning his seventh World Championship, but he struggled in the opening stages of the current campaign. He was eliminated in the second round of the Championship League tournament in late July. O’Sullivan withdrew from the season’s second event, the European Masters for medical reasons. O’Sullivan was eliminated in the round of 128 in the British Open.
The win at the Hong Kong Masters is especially notable since O’Sullivan’s performance at the British Open left 1999 World Champion Stephen Hendry remarking that O’Sullivan’s play in that event was, “…probably the worst I’ve seen Ronnie play for a good few years.”
O’Sullivan made it to the last 16 in the 2021 Northern Ireland Open.
Judd Trump
The No. 2 ranked snooker player in the world, Judd Trump was one of the eight players invited to the Hong Kong Masters. Trump did not make it out of the first round. His opponent in that round, the No. 5 ranked John Higgins defeated him 5-4.
Trump was eliminated in the opening round of the 2022-23 version of the Champion’s League. He followed that by making it to the quarter-finals of the European Masters. As for the British Open, Trump made it to the last 16 before losing to eventual winner Mark Allen.
The 33-year-old Trump won the World Championship in 2019. He made it to the quarter-finals of the 2021 Northern Ireland Open before losing to eventual champion Mark Allen.
Our pick
I think the Hong Kong Masters was a good place for Neil Robertson to shake off any rust he had from his layoff and that he will come to the 2022 Northern Ireland Open prepared and focused to get a win. Robertson is the best bet to win the Northern Ireland Open.
Pick: Neil Robertson to win the 2022 Northern Ireland Open snooker tournament.
